The producer
Chateau Quintus was born from the union of the Chateau Tertre Daugay and Chateau L'Arrosee properties, acquired by the Domaine Clarence Dillon family company in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Chateau Quintus is thus the fifth property of the Domaine Clarence Dillon group, which also owns Chateaux Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion. The property takes its name from the Gallo-Roman tradition of naming one's fifth child Quintus.
The vineyard
The 28-hectare vineyard of this Saint-Emilion Grand Cru boasts a unique mosaic of terroirs. Aged 30 years on average, the vines are planted on a plateau with a succession of limestone strata facing south, as well as in clay-limestone and gravel soils facing south in the northernmost region of the property.
The vintage
Despite cool temperatures and heavy rainfall during the winter and spring, flowering was even. The great summer drought ended well with a rainy episode in mid-September, which was beneficial for the vineyard. The alternation in October of sunny days and cool nights was ideal for refining the ripening process of the fruit, and resulted in a wine that is rich in color, with fresh and fruity aromas.
The blend
The Chateau Quintus 2016 is made from a blend of Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Franc (30%).
The tasting
Color
The color is a beautiful garnet red.
Nose
The nose exudes intense fruity fragrances.
Palate
A supple and silky attack gives way to a juicy, deep and precise palate. The fruity flavors blend harmoniously with subtle oaky notes.
The 2016 Quintus is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and features a quiet intensity of chocolate-covered cherries, warm mulberries and plum preserves scents with underlying hints of dried lavender, star anise and potpourri. Medium-bodied, the palate is packed with perfumed black fruit layers, framed by seductively plush tannins and great freshness and finishing with fantastic length.
