Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Palmer 10 Years On 2016
Tasting
Color
The wine shows a deep, dense ruby color edging toward dark garnet, with purple glints that still speak to its relative youth despite a decade of cellaring. The core of the glass remains remarkably opaque, while the rim shows only the faintest hint of brick, a sign that the wine has only just begun its evolution. Viewed in the glass, thick legs reveal a rich, concentrated texture.
Nose
The nose opens on ripe black and blue fruit – blackcurrant, blueberry compote, black cherry, and dark plum – layered with violet and peony blossom that recall the delicate character typical of Margaux. With time in the glass, notes of raspberry and strawberry emerge alongside Sichuan pepper, blond tobacco, cedar, and a touch of dark chocolate, while graphite, tobacco leaf, and fresh herbal accents add further complexity. The aromatic profile needs air to fully unfold, rewarding patience and extended decanting.
Palate
The palate is medium to full-bodied, dense and beautifully balanced, with a silky core of black and blue fruit framed by remarkably fine-grained tannins. The texture builds progressively, revealing successive layers of fruit, floral nuance, and gentle spice, while well-integrated oak and lively acidity keep the wine fresh. The finish is long, lined with ripe tannins and a lingering sense of freshness that calls for another sip.
Food and wine pairings
Château Palmer 10 Years On 2016 pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats, such as a roast beef tenderloin or an aged rib-eye, where the wine's velvety tannins and dark fruit meet the richness of the meat. It also suits refined game dishes, as well as tender cuts like veal or free-range poultry served with mushroom-based sauces or truffle jus. For a vegetarian option, dishes built around wild mushrooms, root vegetables, and rich, umami-driven sauces make an elegant match. Aged hard cheeses, such as a mature Comté or Beaufort, round out the pairing possibilities nicely.
Serving and cellaring
Château Palmer 10 Years On 2016 is best served at a temperature of around 60–64°F (16–18°C), ideally in a large-bowled glass that allows the bouquet to open fully. Decanting is highly recommended, as the wine tends to appear reserved immediately after opening and benefits greatly from aeration to release its full aromatic range and soften its structure.
Other characteristics
This release belongs to Château Palmer's "10 Years On" program, through which the estate markets its Grand Vin a full decade after harvest, following extended aging within its own cellars under carefully controlled conditions. Each bottle carries a QR code offering an immersive digital journey through the vintage's life cycle and the estate's distinctive world.
A Margaux from Château Palmer, shaped by time and texture
The Estate
Château Palmer is a renowned estate in the Margaux appellation, on Bordeaux's left bank, in the commune of Cantenac. Founded in 1814 when British officer Charles Palmer acquired and expanded the property, it has been owned since the mid-twentieth century by the Mähler-Besse and Sichel families. Today, General Manager Thomas Duroux leads the estate, which has fully converted to organic and biodynamic farming since 2014 and operates as a holistic, self-sustaining agricultural ecosystem.
The Vineyard
The vines sit within the Margaux appellation, on gravel-rich soils shaped by ancient river terraces that favor drainage and even ripening. The estate relies on a finely mapped mosaic of terroirs, with high-density planting and deep-rooted vines cultivated under organic and biodynamic principles, supported by cover crops, compost, and agroforestry practices that encourage soil vitality and biodiversity.
The Vintage
The 2016 growing season began with a mild winter that brought an early budbreak for the merlot, roughly a week ahead of the historical average. A rainy spring created favorable conditions for mildew pressure, requiring close vineyard monitoring, while a moderately warm, non-excessive summer allowed for steady, unhurried ripening. These conditions led to one of the latest harvests in recent memory, with picking taking place between October 3 and 18.
Winemaking and aging
For Château Palmer 10 Years On 2016, grapes were fermented separately by plot in temperature-controlled, cone-shaped vats to preserve the distinct character of each parcel. The wine was then aged for 22 months in oak barrels, roughly 60% new, before further bottle aging at the château as part of the estate's decade-long "10 Years On" release program.
Grape Varieties
47% merlot, 47% cabernet sauvignon, 6% petit verdot.
