Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Angélus 2023

Tasting

Colour
The colour seduces with its brilliance and its violet reflections.

Nose
Opening on intense fragrances of flowers and black fruits, the nose reveals notes of graphite and mint as it aerates.

Palate
A sharp and precise attack precedes a palate where spicy and woody notes blend harmoniously with fine tannins and a rare freshness and elegance.

The refinement and vivacity of a great Saint-Émilion wine

The estate

Iconic wine, the Château Angélus gets its name from the vine growers who heard the three churches ringing simultaneously in the heart of the famous medieval city of Saint-Émilion. This mythical property of the appellation was founded in 1782 and, for 8 generations, the de Boüard de Laforest family has been watching over this exceptional heritage.

The vineyard

This Château Angélus 2023 is a Saint-Émilion wine from a 32-hectare vineyard. The vines, averaging 39 years old, are located on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion within the famous " foot of the slope ". This terroir extends over clay-limestone soils. Listening to its environment, the estate is committed to converting to Organic Agriculture and the vineyard is certified High Environmental Value level 3.

The vintage

The spring mildness combined with regular rainfall leads to high mildew pressure. Subsequently, dry and sunny conditions favour optimal flowering before a cool summer, punctuated by storms. At harvest time, the vineyard is healthy and the berries are harvested at the quintessence of their maturity and balance.

Vinification and ageing

Parcel harvest at optimal maturity. Vinifications in wooden and stainless steel vats for the merlots, in concrete vats for the cabernet francs. Pre-fermentation maceration at 8°C for a duration of 10 days. Alcoholic fermentation up to 28°C - 30°C. Post-fermentation maceration from one to three weeks. Barrelling following racking. Ageing for 22 months in new French oak barrels and vats according to the grape varieties.

Blend

Merlot (60%)
Cabernet Franc (40%).
