Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

This mouthwatering Champagne feels like a swathe of raw silk on the palate, where flavors of sun-dried white cherry, toast and Meyer lemon peel are accented by expressive saffron, ground coffee and mandarin orange peel aromas. Long and racy on the honey-, spice- and smoke-laced finish. Disgorged winter 2016 to 2017. Drink now through 2025.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The MV Grande Cuvée 166ème, based on the 2010 vintage, offers good depth, but it also comes across as a bit angular and in need of time in bottle to soften. Certainly, next to the 2008 and 2009 editions, the 2010 is a touch rough around the edges. Even so, there is good freshness and verve to the bright citrus, mineral and floral flavors.

La RVF

Made from 140 wines spanning the 1998 to 2010 vintages, this cuvée captures all the complexity and the Krug style. A complex wine with beautifully controlled, evolving notes and a dazzling finish.

Description

The richness and elegance of a legendary Krug Champagne

Each year, Krug recreates its legend through an exceptional Champagne. In the 166th Edition of a series of legendary Champagnes, the new Grande Cuvee Krug 166 reveals the brilliance and virtuosity of a blend of 140 wines from 13 different vintages, the youngest dating from 2010 and the oldest from 1998.

With grapes from the 2010 harvest, the Maison Krug's Grande Cuvee 166 immortalizes the expression of a vintage during which the contrasts in weather triggered the expression of each grape variety.

The complexity and unparalleled sophistication testifies to the know-how that gives the House of Krug its acclaim. The Grande Cuvee 166 Krug blend combines 45% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay from the best terroirs of the Cote des Blancs, and 16% Pinot Meunier for a touch of zeal. This exceptional Grande Cuvee 166th Edition brings together no less than 42% of reserve wines, which combine the structure and roundness of the wines from 2000 with the wines from 2006 from Verzy and Bouzy to harmonize with the generosity of the Grande Cuvee de Krug.

After taking the time to age in the cool, impressive chalk cellars of the House, the Krug Grande Cuvee 166th edition is a discovery of a sensational elegance and distinction. The appearance charms with finesse and liveliness to reveal a perfect stream of bubbles. The aromatic bouquet is one of refinement and complexity with apple, hazelnut and rich nougat aromas, along with delicate floral notes. The palate evolves with liveliness to give a pure and distinctive texture. A deliciously round mouthfeel unfolds with elegance that is subtly balanced between the flavors and the biting acidity. The precision, elegant elegance and refinement of this cuvee will seduce the greatest Krug lovers and will promise great aging potential.
