Robert Parker

Kristaps Karklins

Billecart-Salmon’s 2009 Le Clos Saint-Hilaire, disgorged in January 2024 with a dosage of two grams per liter, is showing even more impressively than it did when I tasted it with only a year on cork after disgorgement. The bouquet is deep and expressive, revealing notes of dried apricot, pear, blanched almond and orange oil, mingled with cherry plum and a touch of Madagascar vanilla. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and rich yet incisive, its amplitude deftly counterbalanced by racy acidity before culminating in a persistent, citrus-tinged finish that underscores the wine’s fresh, tight-knit profile—enhanced by its non-malolactic style.

Decanter

Billecart-Salmon's sheltered walled garden of Pinot Noir in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ has really come into its own in 2009, yielding a wine with all the intensity and volume that this cuvée tends to carry, but held in a more juicy, less firmly drawn structure than the preceding vintages. Indeed the soft generosity of 2009 seems to play to this wine's strengths. The end result is the most approachable and downright enjoyable Clos St-Hilaire of recent times, effortlessly carrying all its fruit of fresh fig, dried pear, roasted red plum and apricot kernel with heady baklava notes and darker, complex aromas of sweet walnut and cocoa. There's a very welcome shot of bright, malic acidity which which pulls this expansive, warm-hearted Champagne into focus beautifully.

Wine Enthusiast

R.V.

A toast and old gold aroma, marks this single-vineyard Champagne's impressive age. It is certainly not old, rich with toast and spice with an intense and gorgeous concentration of flavors. It is a magnificent wine, its balance impeccable and perfect to drink now.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Clos Saint-Hilaire 2009 from Maison Billecart-Salmon

Tasting

Color
The color of the wine presents a magnificent golden yellow, enhanced by brilliant shining reflections.

Nose
On the nose, this champagne reveals a complex and refined nose, mixing notes of malted cereals, pastries and mandarin flesh. As the wine breathes, delicious notes of roasted coffee bean, toasted bread, vanilla pod and blond tobacco also unfold.

Palate
The ample and expressive palate seduces with its exotic and gourmet flavors (chocolate orangettes, licorice stick, cedar wood, blueberries, apricot brandy, lemon liqueur), supported by a mineral and chalky finish of great elegance.

Service and aging

Serve between 12° and 14°C. This cuvée can wait in cellars for about 10 years.

Food and wine pairings

A wild Turbot ‘’ikejime’’ with Burmese coffee or a fine tartlet with roasted Ceps are refined pairings with this vintage champagne.

A complex and structured Blanc de Noirs vinified in wood

The property

Since its creation in 1818 by the spouses Elisabeth Salmon and Nicolas-François Billecart, the Champagne Billecart-Salmon House has remained independent, preserving for 7 generations the entirety of its know-how and the demand for the quality of its cuvées.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Maison Billecart-Salmon extends from the Côte des Blancs to the Montagne de Reims over nearly 100 hectares. The vines are cultivated and cared for in a traditional way in order to approach an authentic fruit and reflect the quality of the Champagne terroir.

The cuvée

Coming from a one-hectare plot of old vines planted in 1964, this Blanc de Noirs meets particularly demanding standards: it is a single plot, enclosed and in one piece.

Vinification and aging

This vintage champagne 2009 benefits from a full vinification in barrels, a choice that gives it remarkable complexity and structure. Maturation on lees extends over a period of nearly 13 years and the dosage is 2 g/l.

Grape variety

Pinot noir (100%).
