Description
A great Loire Valley white wine, lively and precise
The estate
Established at the beginning of the 19th century in Sancerre by Alphonse Mellot, this family-run house has been passed down from generation to generation. The Mellot family, mentioned in archives as early as the 16th century, was already renowned as winegrowers and merchants. In 1698, King Louis XIV even chose César Mellot as a viticulture advisor.
Tradition dictates that the eldest of each generation bears the founder’s first name. To this day, Alphonse Mellot father and son carry on this heritage, crafting Sancerres of very high quality from a single-block vineyard of over 30 hectares.
Vineyard
The La Moussière cuvée comes from a Sancerre vineyard of 34 hectares, farmed organically and biodynamically. The vines, 4 to 40 years old, are planted on Saint-Doulchard marls (caillottes), with south/southwest exposure.
Winemaking and aging
After harvest, the clusters are sorted on a table then conveyed to the presses by belt. They undergo sequential pneumatic pressing in whole clusters. The must is then clarified for about 48 hours at under 10 °C. Fermentation takes place half in tanks and half in new barrels. This white Sancerre is then aged on fine lees for 7 to 8 months before bottling at the estate.
Grape variety
La Moussière 2024 by Alphonse Mellot is 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
