Description
A Lively and aromatic Biodynamic Wine
Following a successful career in finance, Nicolas Joly started his journey in wine after taking over his family’s Loire estate in 1977. Known for his pioneering role in biodynamic winemaking, Joly took an unconventional and, at the time, controversial route to modernize his family’s vineyard. It wasn’t until he encountered a book on biodynamic farming during his research in 1980 that he really started experimenting on his estate. By 1984, the estate’s range was produced 100% biodynamically and today Joly continues to inspire many producers who have converted their vineyards. Joly has written several books and continues to manage his estate with his daughter Virginie. Together this duo produces some of the best, complex and thought-provoking white wines in France.
Savennieres is a highly respected appellation in the Anjou region of Loire. This area is known for producing some of the finest dry and crisp Chenin Blanc in the world. For most of history, the wines of Savennieres have been sweet or off-dry. However, since the 20th century the area has become known for concentrated, dry and long-lived wines in a sea of sweeter styles throughout Anjou. The vineyards of Savennieres grow on slopes with shallow sandstone and schist soils, with bits of volcanic rock and sand. There are yield restrictions within appellation law allowing for wines that are highly concentrated, intense and structured.
The Nicolas Joly Les Vieux Clos 2017 is a lively and aromatically complex wine. The 2017 vintage is a benchmark for this cuvee – it is simply a must-have for your cellar. The vines saw a spring frost resulting in much lower yields, however the summer and fall were warm and dry, resulting in a great crop despite its size. Les Vieux Clos is 5.5 hectares of Chenin Blanc planted in 1990 – the youngest site of Joly’s estate. It is expressive, with notes of pear, passion fruit, nectarine and a hint of savoriness. Aged in used barrels for six to eight months, this wine has plenty of layered complexity, adding notes of smoke and roundness on a mineral and crisp backbone.
