Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

A very fresh, lilting style, with silky damson plum and bitter cherry notes mixed with rooibos tea and blood orange hints. Silky, mineral-driven finish. Accessible now. Drink now through 2027. 2,500 cases made.

Decanter

Such a sense of the limestone terroir on the nose and palate here, with wet stone and graphite nuances edged with perfumed red cherries. Super smooth with a grippy yet gentle texture. Well-integrated tannins are lifted by serious succulence on the mid-palate; this is juicy and bright but also layered with strawberry, red cherry, and blueberry fruit. Playful yet well controlled and well presented. The finish is lasting and impactful. A perky wine that is stylish and utterly moreish.

Pure Merlot with plenty of berry and stone character. Medium-bodied, with round tannins that spread across the palate. Creamy texture and a delicious, savory finish. 40% no wood. So drinkable now.

The 2019 Mondot has an expressive nose with blackberry, raspberry, sous-bois and cedar scents that give it a subtle Left Bank allure. The palate is medium-bodied with bitter red fruit, angular tannins, a bit tough and rough around the edges. It marches to a different beat from the others. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The second wine of the estate and all Merlot, the 2019 Mondot By Mondot has a juicy, earthy black cherry, spring flowers, pen ink, and graphite-driven bouquet that carries to a medium-bodied red that builds nicely with time in the glass, offering ripe tannins, plenty of richness, and outstanding length. It will keep for 10-12 years, easily.

Fragrant plum and peony aromatics, a little closed on the palate, you feel that limestone grip straight away, with a chalky edge to the tannins and slightly austere yet juicy, slate-scraping raspberry fruit. A wine with personality, one that speaks of its soils. For now, entirely Merlot from limestone soils, but Cabernet Franc may be added from 2022, so if you like this style of Mondot, make the most of it now! 35% one-year-old barrels, 70% stainless steel.

The 2019 Mondot, 100% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple in color. Cherry compote, wild blueberries, and boysenberries scents emerge easily from the glass with touches of licorice, rose oil, and tobacco leaf. The medium to full-bodied palate is soft and juicy, with just enough freshness and a spicy lift on the finish.

An intense bouquet marked by notes of red berries and freshness, along with a floral touch. One could almost say it “

My highest score for this wine en Primeur along with the 2018. Dark, intense color. Gorgeous nose of ripe fruit, delicately creamy, spicy, with a hint of Rhône character. A delicious, subtle palate, bursting with fruit, flavorful, with the finest texture ever seen here. It must be said that, for the first time, all the plots that make it up have limestone terroir. Very precise. 100% Merlot.

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for Mondot 2019

Tasting

This Saint-Emilion wine seduces with its density, balance, and harmonious alliance between a fruity structure and a beautiful freshness.

A supple and intense Saint-Emilion wine

The estate

On the right bank of Bordeaux where most properties hardly exceed 10 hectares, the Chateau Troplong Mondot is one of the largest estates in Saint-Emilion. Founded in 1700, this Premier Grand Cru Classe gravitates at the top of the Saint-Émilion appellation.

The vineyard

A reference among the great Saint-Emilion wines, Chateau Troplong Mondot oversees a 43-hectare vineyard in one piece, peaking at 110 meters in altitude. The vineyard is entirely conducted in reasoned viticulture. The vines, averaging 30 years old, are grown on typical clay-limestone soils of the appellation.

Vinification and aging

The aging in stainless steel tanks up to 40% allows to develop the aromatic intensity of the wine, its density as well as its tension conferred by the limestone soils.
