Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Chambertin 2020 from Domaine Denis Mortet
Tasting
Appearance
The appearance is a deep and intense purple.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals remarkable complexity, unveiling notes of noble red fruit with aromas of raspberries and cherries. Floral nuances of peonies and violets follow, accompanied by accents of blood orange zest, undergrowth and glowing embers.
Palate
On the palate, this Grand Cru impresses with its full, multi-layered and harmonious structure, offering multifaceted depth and dimension. The tannins are distinguished by their exceptional finesse and structuring character, conveying a remarkable sense of completeness. Despite its velvety texture, the wine shows subtle spicy and saline accents. The finish is long, perfumed and elegant, underpinned by a flawless minerality characteristic of the Domaine's finest wines.
Food and wine pairing
This Chambertin 2020 pairs excellently with roasted feathered game, crusted Charolais beef or a cheese platter with mature cheeses such as Époisses or Brillat-Savarin.
Service and cellaring
This Chambertin 2020 can be enjoyed now, but will reach its peak between 2032 and 2034. It is recommended to decant it one to two hours before serving and to serve at a temperature of 16 to 18°C.
A Burgundy Grand Cru of exceptional elegance and depth
The Estate
Domaine Denis Mortet, whose history began in 1956 with Charles Mortet in Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy, is a key reference in the Côte de Nuits. Denis Mortet, who succeeded his father Charles in 1992, developed this Domaine, which today covers 16 hectares spread over a hundred plots. Since Denis's premature death in 2006, Laurence, Arnaud and Clémence Mortet have run the estate together. The vineyard includes prestigious appellations such as Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares and Mazis-Chambertin as Grands Crus, as well as the Premiers Crus Lavaux Saint-Jacques and Les Perrières. Influenced by Henri Jayer and Lalou Bize-Leroy, the Domaine combines power and finesse, embodying Burgundian excellence.
The Vineyard
This Chambertin comes from a 15-are vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin near Combe Grisard. The terroir benefits from an eastern exposure with optimal sunshine on slopes that are less steep and cooler than Clos de Bèze. The vines, 60 years old on average, are rooted in complex soils: on the upper slope, white marl soils slow down the vegetative cycle, while on the lower slope, limestone-marl soils reveal lovely dark brown clays. The mid-slope, consisting of fine loam and scree, ensures excellent drainage. This mosaic of terroirs, combining upper and lower slopes, confers a rare balance, ideal for the expression of Pinot Noir.
Vinification and aging
The harvest of Chambertin 2020 is done manually in small crates. After rigorous selection, the grapes are partially destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by very moderate pump-overs and punch-downs. Aging lasts 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels.
