Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Chambertin 2020 from Domaine Denis Mortet
Tasting
Color
The color displays a deep and intense purple hue.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals remarkable complexity, unveiling notes of noble red fruits with aromas of raspberries and cherries. Added to these are floral nuances of peonies and violets, accompanied by touches of blood orange zest, undergrowth and smoldering embers.
Palate
On the palate, this grand cru impresses with its full, layered and harmonious structure, offering multiple depth and dimension. The tannins stand out for their exceptional refinement and structural character, providing a remarkable sense of completeness. Despite its velvety texture, the wine presents subtle savory and saline touches. The finish extends at length, fragrant and elegant, crossed by an impeccable minerality characteristic of the estate's finest wines.
Food and wine pairings
This Chambertin 2020 will magnificently accompany roasted game birds, a piece of Charolais beef in crust or a platter of aged cheeses such as époisses or brillat-savarin.
Service and aging
This Chambertin 2020 can be enjoyed now but will reach its peak between 2032 - 2034 approximately. It is advisable to decant it one to two hours before service and to serve it at a temperature of 16 to 18°C.
A Burgundy Grand Cru of exceptional elegance and depth
The estate
The Domaine Denis Mortet, whose history begins in 1956 with Charles Mortet in Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy, represents a major reference of the Côte de Nuits. Denis Mortet, succeeding his father Charles in 1992, developed this estate which today extends over 16 hectares divided into about one hundred parcels. Since Denis's premature death in 2006, Laurence, Arnaud and Clémence Mortet have jointly managed the property. The vineyard includes prestigious appellations such as Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares and Mazis-Chambertin in Grands Crus, as well as the Premiers Crus Lavaux Saint-Jacques and Les Perrières. Influenced by Henri Jayer and Lalou Bize-Leroy, the estate combines power and finesse, embodying Burgundian excellence.
The vineyard
This Chambertin comes from a 15-are vineyard, located in Gevrey-Chambertin near the Combe Grisard. The terroir benefits from an east-facing exposure offering optimal sunlight, on slopes that are less steep and cooler than Clos de Bèze. The vines, averaging 60 years old, are rooted in complex soils: at the top of the slope, white marly soils slow down the vegetative cycle, while at the bottom of the slope, marly-limestone soils reveal superb very brown clays. The mid-slope position, composed of fine silts and scree, ensures excellent drainage. This mosaic of terroirs, combining top and bottom of slope, provides a rare balance, ideal for the expression of pinot noir.
Vinification and aging
The harvest of Chambertin 2020 is carried out manually in small crates. After rigorous sorting, the grapes are partially destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by very moderate pumping over and punching down. Aging takes place over 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels.
