Vinum

Exceptionally floral and delicately fragrant, radiant, clear, pure, profound, complex, playful, inviting you to dive in; highly elegant on the palate, the fruit is crisp, the tannins are of excellent quality, fresh, with great tension, plenty of finesse and harmony. A grace.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Shows the savory edge of the vintage, but harnesses it to complement a mix of violet, black cherry and red currant fruit flavors. The finish reveals almost no grain as a subtle black tea note weaves through, also delivering a light iron underpinning. A solid effort -- kudos. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2035.

Decanter

Beautifully perfumed on the nose, smells sweet and delicate. Smooth and ample in the mouth, succulent and juicy, quite lean, a sense of austerity in the cool, mineral-edged fruit – blackcurrant and blueberry with cola edges and wet stone touches too. It's refined for sure, missing a touch more weight but there's great winemaking on show. First year in organic conversion which can't have been easy. They've done a great job and it's beautifully delicate and poised, an elegant and polished rather than weighty expression.

James Suckling

Black berry, black cherry and sandalwood aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, with chewy tannins that are polished and fresh. Linear and racy at the end. A crisp and solid young Bordeaux. Give this three or four years to come around. Best after 2027.

The complex aromatics here burst with dried flowers, espresso, cigar wrapper, spice, brown sugar, and an array of red and black fruits. The wine is elegant, refined, fresh, silky, and lifted. The fruits are sweet, pure, precise, and well-defined. In fact, it’s so good it would be a success in any vintage. But in 2021, it’s a screaming success and clearly one of the wines of the vintage! Drink from 2026–2052.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby garnet colour with purple reflections, delicate brightening on the rim. Ripe heart cherries, some nougat and precious wood, a hint of orange zest. Juicy, ripe cherries, delicate sweetness, elegant and fresh, already developed, medium length, accessible, versatile style, ready to drink.

One of the best in the vintage, the 2021 Château Rauzan-Ségla has beautiful cassis and red currant-like fruit that gives way to notes of tobacco, cedar pencil, and hints of flowers. It's medium-bodied, has a supple, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's a gorgeous 2021 that has an almost Château Lafite-like sense of balance and elegance. Readers will love drinking bottles over the coming 15-20 years. The 2021 is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, hitting 13.5% natural alcohol (pH 3.72), which was brought up in 60% new French oak.

Rauzan Ségla 2021 has a dark, deep color. On the nose, it shows exuberant, expansive, generous, and rich fruit. Although it still comes across as very youthful and closed, it is very delicate and refined. Juicy attack on the palate; here it is extraordinarily concentrated and clearly structured, with extremely fine tannins endowed with plenty of silkiness and character. A great, nuanced, elegant Margaux with an endlessly long finish. Seductive and delicate, just as one would expect from this remarkably authentic Margaux. 13.0% alc./vol.

Classic Rauzan Ségla in that it is sculpted and finessed, with rose petal and black tea notes. Far from the concentrated gourmet take that we have had in vintages like 2022 or 2020, but it has real precision, with sinewy, graceful blueberry and blackcurrant fruits, and a juicy finish. Tasted twice, 45% of overall production. First full year of conversion to organics. Nicolas Audebert director, Eric Boissenot consultant.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2021 Rauzan-Segla is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It prances out with showy notes of black cherries, juicy blackcurrant, and fresh blackberries, leading to touches of lilacs, dark chocolate, and star anise. The medium-bodied palate is velvety and mouth-coating, delivering perfumed black fruit with impressive harmony and depth.

La RVF

Slightly less approachable than some of its neighbors, this wine shows admirable definition and plenty of potential. The palate is intense, very elongated, with great length. The whole is driven by lovely energy, and the breath of freshness on the finish is especially pleasant.

Le Figaro Vin

An aromatic profile that builds in intensity, unfolding in the nose with notes of juicy blackcurrant and chocolate ganache, evolving toward heady liqueur accents. On the palate, the wine takes you on a sensory journey, conjuring a multitude of images and sounds that appear and vanish in an instant. The finish is refined, with a very feminine, delicate touch and a delectable chew.

The nose is fruity, offering brightness, aromatic purity, delicacy, a certain precision/finesse, and a light, airy silkiness. It reveals notes of pulpy blackcurrant, cornflower, and, more lightly, violet, joined by small touches of blue fruits and strawberry, as well as delicate hints of zan/star anise, a discreet hint of eucalyptus, and Bourbon vanilla. The palate is nicely mineral, subtle, and offers lace-like texture, a tangy backbone, a wine beautifully marked by minerality. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy/pulpy blackberry and, more lightly, violet and fresh blackcurrant, combined with touches of raspberry, fine hints of lily, small bright red berries, a subtle hint of blueberry, cardamom, tonka bean, crushed toasted almond, with subtle hints of Bourbon vanilla, sappy (in the background). Good length.

Beautiful deep dark red and purple. Intense, fine, fruity, pure and subtle nose. Delicate on the attack, precise mid-palate, with a supple, flavorful body; the wine develops with lots of fruit, leading to a finish of normal length with a perfumed grain.

Such accuracy, purity and precision in the bouquet of Rauzan-Ségla 2021. Everything is measured, with a keen sense of detail. The oak thus works behind the scenes to champion the finesse of this wine composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. On the palate, Rauzan-Ségla shows exceptional serenity. Admittedly, it is certainly more delicate than usual, but it manages to turn this into an asset, shining with this lightness and highlighting that a structure does not live by its foundations alone, but also by its details. These, therefore, can be an integral part of the base and reinforce the finish. That’s precisely why they are there! The difference is often in the details… A great success.

Description

The purity and freshness of a great red wine from Margaux

The estate

A Grand Cru Classe of Margaux, Chateau Rauzan-Segla is a prestigious Bordeaux estate with an exciting history. For 350 years, Rauzan-Segla has sought to express a certain precision in their wines as a product of centuries of savoir-faire. A Second Classified Growth of 1855, Chateau Rauzan-Segla is one of the most prestigious references of the Margaux appellation.

The vineyard

A benchmark among fine Margaux wines, Chateau Rauzan-Segla reigns over a 70-hectare vineyard. The vines are 38 years old on average and are planted in the heart of the appellation on fine, deep clayey gravel soils.

The vintage

After experimenting for several years, 2021 marks the first year of conversion towards organic farming. The estate aims to obtain the certificate in 2024. Despite a year marked by a particularly unstable climate, the involvement of the teams and rigorous management of the vineyard have resulted in an increase in yields.

Vinification and aging

Hand-picked grapes in small crates followed by manual sorting. Vinification by plot and intra-plot with gravity-flow vatting in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (60% new oak).

Chateau Rauzan-Segla 2021: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

Nose

The nose opens with refreshing fruity (wild strawberries) and floral (rose) fragrances. When aerated, the bouquet enhances its complexity through notes of peony, white sap, pepper, chocolate and raspberry.

Palate

A lively and unctuous attack gives way to a palate that reveals the purity of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, that make up the majority of the blend. Perfectly balanced, the palate is seduced with this wine’s suave bitterness and great finesse.
