Robert Parker

William Kelley

The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla has turned out brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with fragrant aromas of cassis, blackberries, violets, rose petals and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and concentrated, it's deep and layered, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is a sensual, elegant Rauzan-Ségla from Nicolas Audebert and his team.

Less complex and less expressive on the fruit than the most successful wines in its category, but seriously well-structured.

Offers a very elegant core of red and black currant and damson plum fruit that glides through with silky structure for support, while light mulling spice and incense notes infuse the finish. A rather understated style, but sneaky long and very refined. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2034.

Decanter

A lovely example of Margaux which balances floral notes with herbal characters and intense black fruit flavours. Great concentration and a balance of power and finesse. The tannins are so glossy and polished. Cassis liqueur rather than blackcurrant juice on the palate, with a smoothness and sumptuousness that makes tasting this Rauzan-Ségla a joy. Will age extremely well.

James Suckling

Subtle and complex aromas of sweet berries, rose stems and lavender with some sandalwood. Medium- to full-bodied with beautiful depth of fruit, creamy tannins and lots of chocolate and berry character. Yet, it’s tight on the finish, showing beautiful depth and length. So structured. Try after 2027.

Antonio Galloni

The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla is a statuesque Margaux that is all in reserve. There is plenty of power and depth, but the 2019 is pretty closed today. Even so, the 2019 is clearly a wine of harmony and exquisite balance that is playing its cards close to the vest. Sweet dark cherry, plum, licorice spice and a touch of new oak are laced into the vibrant, persistent finish. The 2019 is a super-classic Rauzan-Ségla that will thrill those who can wait. Tasted three times.

Silky, seductive and sensuous, the nose, with its blend of flowers, tobacco leaf, espresso bean, violets, roses and red pit fruits, is already quite showy. Medium to full-bodied, fresh, vibrant, clean and pure, the fruit offers length, depth and complexity. But it will need a bit of time to fully express its essence. If you have a bit of patience, it will be worth the wait. Drink from 2030–2060.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Floral bouquet, candied violet and liquorice, ripe heart cherry, a hint of bourbon vanilla. Juicy, elegant, red forest berries, full-bodied tannins, chocolaty core, lingers, a hint of caramel on the finish, a pleasant food wine with secure development and certain ageing potential.

The Grand Vin 2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla is beautiful, and it seems this estate can do no wrong since 2015. A more elegant, ethereal, complex Margaux, it has a perfumed and complex style in its red, blue, and black fruits as well as notes of white flowers, chalky minerality, and exotic spices. Haute couture at its finest and seamless, medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and just stunning any way you look at it, it already offers pleasure today yet will easily have 30 years of prime drinking.

This is just the most delicious Rauzan Ségla, with so much depth, carefully placed black cherry, damson and blueberry fruits, juicy even though still so young. A vintage with plenty of tannic architecture, softened by cocoa bean, liquorice and rosebud—I love it. Yield 42 hl/ha, 60% new oak, pH 3.73. Harvest from September 12th to October 9th. Nicolas Audbert director, Eric Boissenot consultant. An upscore since I last tasted this wine.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.5% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 0.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Rauzan-Segla has a deep garnet-purple color. It storms out of the glass with powerful notes of crème de cassis, juicy black plums, and Indian spices, giving way to fragrant touches of incense, dried roses, and dusty soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of flavors of spicy black fruit preserves, framed by velvety tannins and impressive tension, finishing with great length.

2019 is once again a splendid success for this very racy cru, with a texture that is both intense and ultra‑refined. It has kept improving since the en primeur tasting and falls on the palate with obvious ease and grace, like a haute couture gown.

Le Figaro Vin

The bouquet of red fruits and black berries wafting from the glass makes you want to dip your nose in and savour the moment, to set off in search of those notes of rain-kissed rose petals and mocha. On the palate, the wine is at once juicy, sapid and velvety. Its texture is very Margalais.

It’s true that one could get used to it, yet it is always fascinating to see how much fruit purity, depth, and complexity define the bouquet of Rauzan-Ségla. The palate is not intimidated and responds in kind: it is clear, precise, rich, and refined. Its tannins shine with accuracy, relevance, and power. How can one say so much while merely whispering? This wine shows rare finesse while remaining imposing and powerful. It is quite simply a great wine… or rather, a Very Great Wine—so a VGV… except it stops at every station to delight every palate!

Logo on the cork: AL Black, intense color with purple highlights. Very aromatic nose, delicate, fruity, subtle, complex and noble. Delicate on the attack, very aromatic mid-palate, complex and flavorful; the wine gains in flavor from mid-palate to the finish and stretches out, offering fruit and floral nuances. Juicy, deep ensemble with a slightly austere tannic framework behind which multiple aromas return. A great, characterful wine. Bravo!

Description

The elegance and power of a fine red wine from Margaux

The estate
A Grand Cru Classe of Margaux, Chateau Rauzan-Segla is a prestigious Bordeaux estate with an exciting history. For 350 years, Rauzan-Segla has sought to express a certain precision in their wines as a product of centuries of savoir-faire. A Second Classified Growth of 1855, Chateau Rauzan-Segla is one of the most prestigious references of the Margaux appellation.

The vineyard
The 37-year-old vines of the estate cover 70 hectares. In the heart of the Margaux appellation, the Chateau Rauzan-Segla vineyard is planted in fine, deep clayey gravel typical of the Margaux appellation.

The vintage
2019 will be remembered at Rauzan-Segla for the elegance of the wines. After a mild, dry winter followed by a cool, wet spring, summer 2019 was very dry and hot. The autumn rains of mid-September helped avoid significant water stress for the vines, by allowing for a longer ripening process.

The winemaking
Manual plot-by-plot harvest in crates. Plot and intra-plot vinification with gravity-fed vatting, in thermoregulated stainless steel vats.

The aging
18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new oak with medium and a medium-long toast. Racking “à l’esquive.” Fining with egg whites in barrels.

Grape varieties planted
Cabernet sauvignon (62%), merlot (35,5%), petit verdot (2%), cabernet franc (0,5%).

The tasting
Tasted as a wine future, the Chateau Rauzan-Segla 2019 is already revealing the class and elegance of a very fine red wine from Margaux. Classic but not entirely classic, this great vintage ending in -9 has an intense aromatic bouquet, combining floral fragrances of iris, notes of ripe black fruit like morello cherry and even some spices. The palate is refined and sophisticated, expressing the signature characteristics of the great Margaux terroir, with a deliciously mouth-coating texture and silky aromatic profile. With great power and liveliness, the vintage stretches forth on a very long finish, leaving behind a palate-coating impression, full of mystery. A remarkable Rauzan-Segla.
