Description
The finesse and density of a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classe
A vintage marked by strong climatic contrasts, 2018 is in line with the best years for the Grand Cru Classe of Saint-Emilion, Chateau La Marzelle.
With 17 hectares in one piece, Chateau La Marzelle expands over an exceptional vineyard on the high terrace of Saint-Emilion, on the right bank of Bordeaux.
2018 also marks the second year of organic conversion at the estate and the fourth vintage in biodynamics. The year 2018 was full of challenges, including the strong mildew pressure and attack brought on by the mild and rainy spring. The beautiful summer that arrived in early July brought plenty of radiant sunshine, lasting until the date of harvest and creating the perfect conditions for the fruit to ripen. The grape harvest began on September 25th and ended 4 weeks later. It was carried out with thorough attention to detail. Chateau La Marzelle uses a point sorting system, which uses densimetry and calibration to keep only the most beautiful and fully ripe berries.
In the cellar, the wines undergo a very precise parcel-by-parcel vinifciation, thanks to the many different containers, which include stainless steel tanks with frustoconical double walls, barrels of 500 liters and terracotta amphora to preserve the freshness of the fruit.
Blending Merlot (75%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%), the Chateau La Marzelle 2018 is showing signs of a vintage perfectly executed by the property. At the tasting, this vintage presents a magnificent ruby color. An intensely expressive bouquet opens with notes of black fruits, like ripe plums, evolving on beautiful notes of tobacco and flowers. On the palate, the wine slowly spreads its dense and velvety texture, structured by tannins of great finesse. This wine is balanced, lingering for a long time, while maintaining a beautiful aromatic freshness on the finish. A great success for Chateau La Marzelle in a fantastic vintage.
