Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This has a rather ripe core of sappy kirsch and boysenberry preserve flavors, studded with dried anise and warm fruitcake notes. Lots of black tea and singed alder details line the finish. This has really put on weight since the barrel tasting. Best from 2018 through 2023. 5,300 cases made.

Decanter

Oak a little dominant. Fruit behind but drying on the finish. Provisional note.

Light, sharp, bright red fruits and dusty tannins are coupled with the fresh, crisp, red fruit finish. 83-85 pts

Andreas Larsson

Well balanced with medium weight, dense fruit, some new oak, chocolate, ripe tannin, balanced acidity and good length.

Bettane+Desseauve

The vineyard suffered a little in 2013, but the strict grape selection made it possible to produce a wine that now fully expresses itself in a subtle register.

Le Figaro Vin

An oaky wine with decent substance, vegetal on the finish.

Description

A fine and fresh Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

The estate

Located a few kilometers from Saint-Emilion, on the right bank of Bordeaux, Chateau de Ferrand was founded in 1702 by Elie de Bétoulaud and acquired in December 1977 by Baron Bich. Since 1994, his daughter Pauline and her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët have taken the reins of the property, carrying out numerous improvements and innovations, which were rewarded in 2012 by the classification of Chateau de Ferrand as a Grand Cru Classe. Gonzague de Lambert has been director of Chateau de Ferrand since 2017.

Made with great precision, the wines of Chateau de Ferrand are recognised for their structure, their aromas of very ripe red fruits mixed with a delicate freshness and fine tannins.

The vineyard

Covering an area of 42 hectares all in one piece, the vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soil at an altitude of 100 metres. One of the highest properties in the Saint-Emilion appellation, the vines enjoy great ventilation and optimal drainage thanks to the natural slope.

Certified Terra Vitis since 2012 and HEV level 3 since 2018, the Chateau de Ferrand team manages the estate by applying environmentally friendly practices both in the vineyard (mechanical soil tillage, inter-row grassing, manual harvesting) and in the 10 hectares of forest surrounding the vineyard.

Harvested manually, the grapes are rigorously sorted before being vatted by gravity in a completely renovated cellar. Vinification and ageing are carried out on a plot-by-plot basis in order to amplify the expression of each specific terroir.

The vintage

The month of May was marked by significant rainfall and a drop in temperatures. From June to August there were significant variations in temperature and heavy rainfall. On August 2, a violent hailstorm hit the vineyard of the chateau and caused the loss of 15% of the harvest. Despite seasonal temperatures, September and the beginning of October were marked by rainy episodes.

The blend

Chateau de Ferrand 2013 is made from a blend of Merlot (73%), Cabernet Franc (14%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (13%).

The tasting

Color

Brilliant, beautiful red color with subtle rosy reflections.

Nose

The nose reveals woody and spicy notes (cinnamon, pepper).

Palate

The palate seduces with its freshness and persistent aromas of red fruits.
