Description
A complex and elegant champagne by Philipponnat
The producer
Established for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Philipponnat Champagne House is one of the historic names in the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values that guide this house, which has remained a family-owned business. Owned by the house since 1935, the mythical Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious plots in the Champagne region. This utter gem is the source of rare and exceptionally powerful champagnes.
The Philipponnat Champagne house reigns over an exceptional 20-hectare vineyard composed of Premiers and Grands Crus in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.
The vintage
Mild and rainy, the autumn and winter precede a spring whose dry, hot and sunny conditions favour an early budding of the vine. The summer rain was accompanied by autumnal temperatures at the end of August. The health of the vines was perfect and the grapes harvested boasted a high quality.
Vinification and ageing
This wine is vinified in a traditional manner, in vats and oak, in order to avoid premature oxidation. Only the juices vinified in vats undergo partial malolactic fermentation. This champagne is aged for five to seven years and the dosage is 4.25 g/litre.
The blend
Philipponnat's Blanc de Noirs 2014 is a 100% Pinot Noir. This cuvée is made from vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, Mareuil-sur-Ay, Ay and Avenay-Val-d'Or. The first press is exclusively composed of Premiers and Grands Crus.
Blanc de Noirs 2014 by Philipponnat: Characteristics and tasting tips
The tasting
Colour
Brilliant, the colour is a beautiful light gold. The effervescence is fine, lively and persistent.
Nose
Expressive, the nose exudes notes of white currant, fresh quince and citrus fruit. The vinification in oak (20% of the volume of the blend) provides honeyed and toasted aromas and leads to a subtle vanilla finish.
Palate
Fruity and refreshing, the palate is seduced by this wine’s mineral texture reminiscent of chalky notes. The finish is long and lingering with delicate peppery and spicy notes.
Food and wine pairing
This Blanc de Noirs 2014 by Philipponnat goes perfectly with poultry, game birds, terrines or foie gras.
Service
For an optimal tasting, serve between 8 and 9°C as an aperitif and 10 to 12°C at the table.
Cellaring
Philipponnat's Blanc de Noirs 2014 can be cellared for a minimum of five years to develop its aromatic complexity.
