Robert Parker

Kristaps Karklins

Incorporating “the survivors of 2017,” as Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon notes, Roederer’s 2017 Brut Vintage Rosé is a fine effort in a year that was particularly challenging for red grapes, which were pressured by gray rot come harvest time. Heavily based on Pinot Noir, with fruit carefully selected during picking in Cumières, complemented by Chardonnay sourced from Chouilly, it offers a bouquet of strawberries, candied orange zest and spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and ample, with a delicate infusion of Pinot Noir phenolics, vibrant acidity and a sapid finish. Disgorged with eight grams per liter dosage, it does not quite match the precision of its immediate predecessor.

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the 2017 Vintage Rosé by Louis Roederer

Tasting

Color
Bright, the color is a beautiful pink, adorned with coppery reflections. The effervescence is regular and fine.

Nose
The bouquet, of great intensity, reveals a richness of notes of forest fruits and citrus, enhanced by acidic and powdery accents. Upon aeration, iodine and chocolate nuances are revealed, accompanied by subtle spicy touches.

Palate
In a round and elegant attack, the wine gradually takes its place on the palate, revealing a silky texture. The fruit, concentrated in the middle of the palate, is sublimated by spicy nuances. Fresh and iodine notes evolve towards a finish that recalls the iodine and chocolate nuances perceived on the nose.

A mineral and complex Rosé Champagne

The property

Founded in 1776 in Reims, the Louis Roederer Champagne House has remained family-owned and independent. After more than 200 years of existence, the Louis Roederer House is still in the hands of the same family. Today led by Frédéric Rouzaud, who embodies the seventh generation of the lineage, the Louis Roederer House embodies the excellence of Champagne wines around the world thanks to cuvées crafted like a work of art.

The vineyard

With nearly 241 hectares of vines, the Louis Roederer House draws its strength from its extraordinary vineyard, made up exclusively of Grands and Premiers Crus in the Marne Valley, the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. A true mosaic of terroirs, the Louis Roederer House's vineyard is divided into 410 plots that reflect all the diversity of the Champagne soils.

The wine

An exceptional cuvée, the Louis Roederer Vintage Rosé is born from the great shallow clay-limestone terroirs of Cumières. Facing due south, the vineyard slopes benefiting from the thermal regulating role played by the Marne, have all the conditions to ensure perfect maturity of the berries.

Vinification and aging

Developed over the years by the house and named "infusion", the technique used includes a maceration of pinot noir juice with some chardonnay juice allowing a perfect integration of the grape varieties. This 2017 vintage champagne was vinified in wood to the extent of 29% and a malolactic fermentation was carried out to the extent of 24%. The dosage is 8g/l.
