Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

A mineral-driven version, with an airy, chalky-textured mousse. Deftly integrates hints of smoke and oyster shell with flavors of yellow plum, Gala apple, honeysuckle and salted almond. Refined and persistent on the finish. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Drink now. 15,000 cases imported.

James Suckling

Restrained green apple, lemon bush and lime, plus light brioche and chalk. Medium to full body with fine, nicely persistent bubbles and good substance on the mid-palate. Almost biting yet polished at the end, with long, refreshing acidity. Lacks a bit of complexity at the moment, but fresh. Best from 2025.

La RVF

An aromatic palette that opens with a cool profile and root-like notes. The vintage remains restrained. The palate is slender, with little flesh and a compressed structure. The finish ends on bitters that slightly hinder persistence

Kristaps Karklins

Based on the 2020 vintage, Louis Roederer’s NV Brut Collection 245 is stylistically somewhat comparable to the two previous editions, which were based on the 2018 and 2019 vintages. Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon explains that the personality of the wine will change depending on the base year. By identifying the wine with a number, they do not intend to produce the same profile year in and year out; rather, they embrace the singularity of each vintage, accepting the different personalities of the base year. It is complemented by a perpetual reserve initiated in 2012, stored in large tanks without lees; this reserve brings balance to warm years like this, as the perpetual component did not undergo malolactic fermentation. While a considerable share of the fruit comes from Louis Roederer’s own estates, for this bottling the blend also incorporates purchased fruit, particularly Pinot Meunier, which they do not own. Including approximately 43% Chardonnay, the new Brut Collection offers notes of pear, peach, and candied orange zest. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, textural and fleshy, driven by vibrant acidity and concluding with a nicely defined, delicately saline finish, even with a 7.5 grams per liter dosage.

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for Louis Roederer's Collection 245 cuvée

Tasting

Color
The color is of a beautiful golden yellow hue. The effervescence captivates with its delicacy and regularity.

Nose
Generous, the nose reveals aromas of yellow fruits such as nectarine, ripe citrus fruits such as lemon, and almonds. The impressive maturity of the fruit evolves towards pure and intense aromatic notes, subtly nuanced by smoky accents.

Palate
The palate, velvety, is both ample and juicy. The bubble, almost salty, blossoms in a concentrated and refined texture, perfectly balanced between the substance and a saline freshness, chalky and powdery. Delicate woody and smoky touches precede a long and chiseled finish.

A smooth and fresh multi-vintage champagne by Louis Roederer

The property

Founded in 1776 in Reims, the Champagne House Louis Roederer has remained family-owned and independent. After more than 200 years of existence, the Louis Roederer House is still in the hands of the same family. Today led by Frédéric Rouzaud, who embodies the seventh generation of the lineage, the Louis Roederer House embodies the excellence of Champagne wines around the world thanks to cuvées crafted like a work of art.

The vineyard

With nearly 241 hectares of vines, the Louis Roederer House draws its strength from its extraordinary vineyard, made up exclusively of Grands and Premiers Crus in the Marne Valley, the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. A true mosaic of terroirs, the Louis Roederer House's vineyard is divided into 410 plots that reflect all the diversity of the Champagne soils.

The wine

In order to take the quality of the house's multi-vintage blends even further and to bring more transparency to the blends, Louis Roederer has embarked on a new approach with the creation of Collection.

Made from grapes coming for a third each from the vineyards of "La Rivière", "La Montagne" and "La Côte", Collection consists of a base vintage, reserve wines aged in wood and wines from the perpetual reserve started in 2012 and which takes up the principles of the solera. A supply from a rigorous selection of plots from partner winegrowers completes the house's grapes. Each edition of Collection is thus unique and yet always representative of the Roederer identity and know-how.

Base vintage and reserves

245 for the 245th blend of the house since its creation. Collection 245 by Louis Roederer is a cuvée made from the 2020 vintage to which 10% of reserve wines aged in wood (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) and 35% of perpetual reserve (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) have been added.

Vinification and aging

22% of the blend undergoes malolactic fermentation. The dosage of this Brut champagne is 7g/liter.
