Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Excellent balance along with copious quantities of sweet black cherry and cassis fruit are found in the 2001 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux. Light to medium-bodied, with a style similar to its bigger sister, but neither the concentration nor length, it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.

Wine Spectator

Fresh and floral, with hints of berries and vanilla. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh, fruity finish. Refined. Best after 2007. 20,000 cases made.

02: Around half of the harvest was downgraded to the second wine: a spicy bouquet threaded with floral Cabernet aromas, slight inky nuances, clove tones, and at its core a peppery, racy note. A slender, elegant palate with plenty of licorice and a noble, fine bitterness within a medium-dense extract; the expression, shaped by Cabernet’s presence, comes across a bit cool yet remains fairly persistent. 04: We showed the wine on my Germany tour, and I was surprised by the color, which currently seems darker to me than Margaux itself. The bouquet feels almost a touch compote-like at the top and, lower down, laced with red, just-ripe berries. The acidity is already quite soft, so this charming second wine can be enjoyed now. 16/20 drink – 2013

Description

The freshness and tannic structure of a Second Wine from Margaux

The estate

With origins dating back to the 12th century, Château Margaux is one of those Grands Crus that have established the legend of great Bordeaux wines around the world. In 1855, the château was awarded the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé and was the only one of the four presented châteaux to achieve a score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the estate in 1977 by André Mentzelopoulos, Château Margaux turned a new page in its history. He raised the Grand Vin of Château Margaux to the highest level and reintroduced the château's Second Wine, the Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, which had been launched in 1908. Following in the footsteps of her father, who passed away early, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took over the family banner with energy and passion to maintain the rank of Château Margaux, which has become a Bordeaux masterpiece, so recognizable by its Neo-Palladian appearance. Vintage after vintage, the estate's wines rank among the greatest in the world.

The vineyard

The Château Margaux vineyard owes its particularity to its rare and unique terroir situated on a gravel mound. The estate's planting focuses primarily on the region's dominant black grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon, without forgetting Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The estate's clay-limestone soils produce legendary wines, with a racy and sensual allure, so characteristic of the Margaux appellation.

The vintage

Despite a rainy winter, flowering was rapid and uniform. Summer conditions were optimal for the vineyard, due to an unusual alternation of warm and cool, dry and wet phases.

The blend

This 2001 Pavillon Rouge is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
