Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Also a stunning wine, the 2003 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux is a sleeper of the vintage. Much fresher and less evolved than I would expect a second wine to be from this vintage, it is a Margaux-like effort with a flowery character, good precision and freshness, red and black currant notes, and an attractive, medium-bodied, surprisingly concentrated mouthfeel. It is clearly one of the finest second wines made in this vintage. It can be consumed over the next 5-8 years.

Wine Spectator

Aromas of blackberry and lightly toasted oak follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a rich, fruity aftertaste of plum, berry and vanilla. All there. Solid wine. Best after 2011. 14,165 cases made.

Big, round, and juicy, with lots of plummy and chocolate character. Full and round, very yummy. Why wait? Find the wine

04: It had been a long time since Pavillon showed such a deep color; dark, dense purple. Spicy bouquet, dried damson skins, inky notes and dried pomegranate seeds. On the palate, surprisingly profound, walnut wood, plenty of substance, slightly velvety texture, lots of backbone. Not a delicate Pavillon, but rather a very good Cru Bourgeois, indicating a relatively long life. 17/20 2009 – 2018

Wine Enthusiast

The second wine of Château Margaux is certainly as good as many crus bourgeois. This vintage is ripe and elegant. For fruit that is so ripe what is fascinating is the way the wine finishes with acidity and a great lift. Delicious in three to five years. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

Description

A Margaux red wine combining power and delicacy

The estate

With origins dating back to the 12th century, Château Margaux is among those Grands Crus that have built the legend of Bordeaux’s great wines around the world. In 1855, the estate attained the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé and was the only one of the four châteaux presented to receive a score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the property in 1977 by André Mentzelopoulos, Château Margaux began a new chapter in its history. Elevating the Grand Vin of Château Margaux to the highest level, he reintroduced the estate’s Second Wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, first created in 1908. Following in her father’s footsteps after his premature passing, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took up the family banner with energy and passion to preserve the standing of Château Margaux, which had become a Bordeaux masterpiece, instantly recognizable for its neo-Palladian style. Vintage after vintage, the estate’s wines rank among the greatest in the world.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Margaux owes its uniqueness to its rare and singular terroir, located on a gravelly rise. The estate’s varietal makeup gives pride of place to the region’s flagship black grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s clay-limestone soils give rise to legendary wines, with a racy and sensual character, so representative of the Margaux appellation.

The vintage

The 2003 vintage, remarkably early, was marked by exceptional summer heat, raising questions and concerns. However, the great terroirs managed to preserve perfect balance in the ripening of the grapes. Harvest began on September 10, reminiscent of 1989, one of the earliest since 1893.

Blend

This Pavillon Rouge 2003 is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.
