Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The estate's second wine, the sexy 2009 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, offers lots of black raspberry, cedar and foresty/underbrush notes in its round, generous, full-bodied, seductive embrace of black fruits interwoven with floral notes. This seamless second wine is one of the finest Chateau Margaux has made to date. Enjoy it over the next two decades.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Very sleek, with a lovely winey edge to the plum, cassis and blackberry fruit, laced with roasted apple wood, lilac and singed iron notes. Tangy and lengthy, with ample depth, but also nearly approachable now. Best from 2013 through 2023.

Decanter

This is an absolutely killer combination of vibrant, plush red fruits and finely wrought tannins that are still working hard on the silky-smooth palate. With vibrant edging to the colour and a gorgeous, mouthwatering finish, this is a near-perfect Pavillon – ready to enjoy now but will go long. Great stuff, and bodes well for the rest of the vintage in Margaux.

James Suckling

Very ripe for a second wine, this is now delicious thanks to the rich blackberry and cassis fruit, full supple tannins, and a long finish that's simultaneously dry and creamy. Where is that porterhouse steak? Drink or hold. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019)

The 2009 Pavillon Rouge de Château Margaux has quite a Pauillac-inspired bouquet. Fresh and lively touches of pencil box and leather infuse the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fresh and vibrant and conveying an irresistible sense of energy. It is not a deep or densely structured Margaux but it feels long and tender. Excellent. 13.9% alcohol. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Silky and seductive, from a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, this ripe, fresh wine features supple tannins and a sweet, lush finish filled with blackberry, plum and spice. Enjoy it now, or over the next 10–15 years.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby red with purple hues, subtle brightening on the rim. Tobacco and fresh blackberry, subtle notes of nougat, black cherries, a hint of candied orange zest. Juicy, elegant, a refined extracted sweetness, ripe red cherries, a lovely freshness, already very well developed and drinking well, mineral finish.

Weinwisser

67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Deep purple. A perfumed bouquet of light red roses, raspberry clusters, and fine ripe Merlot chocolate notes. Sublime on the palate, with delicate tannins and a creamy flow, a silky, focused finish, already perfectly poised. At the presentation of the vintage at Château Margaux, Paul Pontallier spoke of what might be the best Pavillon Rouge he ever had the privilege to accompany. He’s right!

René Gabriel

67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Deep purple, dense at the core, with garnet glints at the rim. The bouquet is perfumed with light red roses, raspberry clusters, and at the center even a delicate chocolate note from the ripe Merlots. Sublime on the palate, with gentle tannins and a creamy flow, a silky finish, focused and already perfectly composed. Paul Pontallier said at the vintage presentation that this might be the best Pavillon Rouge he ever had the privilege to accompany at Margaux. He was right!

Bettane+Desseauve

Admirable, subtly floral aroma, inimitable, extreme delicacy within power, a formidable pavilion-red that would have made a perfect great wine only twenty years ago.

Yves Beck

Garnet red with violet highlights. An inviting, fruity bouquet with fruit and floral notes. Scents of morello cherries, violets, and chocolate. Creamy attack, plenty of density on the palate, a suave touch. The tannins are well integrated, tempering the wine’s warmth. Persistent finish. A delicious Pavillon Rouge.

92-94 Barrel sample. Very rich, dense, pushing great blackberry fruits and ripe tannins. As always on the level of a classed growth.

Description

The concentration and delicacy of a Margaux Second Wine

The estate

With origins dating back to the 12th century, Château Margaux is one of those Grands Crus that have built the legend of the great wines of Bordeaux around the world. In 1855, the château achieved the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé and was the only one among the four châteaux presented to receive a perfect twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the estate by André Mentzelopoulos in 1977, Château Margaux began a new chapter in its history. Elevating the Grand Vin of Château Margaux to the highest level, he reintroduced the estate’s Second Wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, first launched in 1908. Following in her father’s footsteps after his premature passing, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took up the family banner with energy and passion to preserve the standing of Château Margaux, which had become a Bordeaux masterpiece, instantly recognizable by its neo-Palladian style. Vintage after vintage, the estate’s wines rank among the greatest in the world.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Margaux owes its uniqueness to its rare and singular terroir, located on a gravel mound. The estate’s varietal makeup gives pride of place to the region’s flagship red grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, without forgetting Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The clay-limestone soils of the estate give rise to legendary wines with a racy, sensual character, so representative of the Margaux appellation. This vintage comprises 41% of the harvest.

The vintage

The 2009 vintage was shaped by a contrasting climate, marked by a cool spring followed by an exceptionally dry summer, comparable to 2005. The absence of rain from July favored the great terroirs and Cabernet Sauvignon, while certain vines on light soils struggled more to reach perfect ripeness. The alternation of hot days and cool nights allowed for a fine concentration of tannins and anthocyanins while preserving aromatic freshness. All the elements came together to make 2009 a truly great vintage.

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), Merlot (29%), Petit Verdot (4%).

Pavillon Rouge 2009 combines classicism with exceptional tannic power—surpassing even 2005—while maintaining remarkable balance thanks to unprecedented softness and delicacy.
