Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The 2000 Pavillon Rouge exhibits a medium/dark ruby color with some lightening at the edge, notes of cedar, spice box, black cherries, and currants, in a very evolved style at full maturity. Drink it over the next 4–5 years.

Glorious aromas of freshly picked raspberries, with tiny hints of cream and minerals. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a long, long finish of berries and cherries. Super second wine from Margaux. Best Pavillon Rouge I have ever tasted. Best after 2010. 20,525 cases made.

Classical vintage with a so-so summer but beautiful September. Very dark crimson – looks much bluer than the 1996. Still bluer than the 2004. Savoury, complex, really rather gorgeous nose even if far from the first flush of youth. Sumptuous nose even if on the palate it’s more austere than the nose suggests. Quite grainy tannins on the finish but lovely balance. Very fresh. (JR)

Soft, approachable, medium-bodied and already open, this is a lighter style of Margaux that can be enjoyed today.

01: Dark purple with a gently lightening rim. Open, expansive bouquet, a delicate fruit that feels overripe, almost nutty, rosehip strawberry purée, rock candy. Fine, silky palate, again a ripe, gently compote-like fruit presentation; on the finish, notes of malt and plum. The peppery extract still shows a slightly dominant acidic tip at the moment, but it gives the wine beautiful length. Very similar in fruit ripeness to the ’90, but seems to have a touch better acidity. 17/20 2004–2014

Description

The complexity and density of a red wine from Margaux

The estate

With origins dating back to the 12th century, the Château Margaux is one of those Grand Crus that have built the legend of the great wines of Bordeaux around the world. The château was awarded the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 and was the only one of the four châteaux presented to have received a score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the estate by André Mentzelopoulos in 1977, Château Margaux writes a new page in its history. Elevating the Grand Vin of Château Margaux to the highest level, he reintroduced the Second Wine of the château, the Pavillon Rouge of Château Margaux, initiated in 1908. Following in her father's footsteps due to his premature death, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took up the family banner with energy and passion to maintain the rank of Château Margaux, which has become a Bordeaux masterpiece, so recognizable by its neo-Palladian style. Vintage after vintage, the estate's wines are among the greatest wines in the world.

The vineyard

The Château Margaux vineyard owes its uniqueness to its rare and unique terroir, located on a gravel mound. The grape variety of the estate favors the black flagship grape of the area, the cabernet sauvignon, not forgetting the merlot, the petit verdot and the cabernet franc. The clay-limestone soils of the estate give birth to legendary wines, with a sleek and sensual style, so representative of the Margaux appellation.

The vintage

The vintage started under a warm and rainy climate favoring mildew, quickly stopped by a very dry summer. The absence of rain in August and early September allowed for optimal ripening and a beautiful concentration of the grapes. Some weak precipitation at the beginning of the harvest did not alter this exceptional vintage in any way.

Blend

Cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot.

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Pavillon Rouge 2000

Tasting

The 2000 vintage stands out for its exceptional concentration of grapes across all plots, leading to a rigorous selection during the blending. This requirement benefited the Pavillon Rouge, which gained in complexity and density, approaching a first wine. With a great aging potential, it has probably not yet reached its peak, although it is already irresistible today.
