A Sicilia DOC Red Wine Built Around Nero d'Avola at Donnafugata
The Estate
Donnafugata was founded in 1983 in Sicily, Italy, by Giacomo Rallo and Gabriella Anca Rallo. The company today farms vineyards across five estates spanning the island, from Contessa Entellina to Pantelleria, Etna and Vittoria. Donnafugata is currently led by José and Antonio Rallo, who represent the fifth generation of the family. The estate is known for its native Sicilian varieties, its multi-terroir approach and its long-standing commitment to environmental and social sustainability.
The Vineyard
The grapes for Nero d'Avola Sherazade 2024 come from the Contessa Entellina estate and other suitable neighboring areas in southwestern Sicily, in the province of Palermo, within the Sicilia DOC appellation. The vineyards lie on clay-loam soils across hillsides at elevations between 200 and 400 meters, benefiting from mild winters, dry and breezy summers, and pronounced day-to-night temperature swings that help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness in the grapes.
The Vintage
The 2024 growing season in Sicily was marked by low rainfall and above-average temperatures, which led to a slightly earlier start to harvest. Yields came in below average, though the fruit reached the level of ripeness and quality sought for this wine.
Winemaking and aging
For Nero d'Avola Sherazade 2024, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with skin maceration carried out at controlled temperature. The wine is then aged in tank for at least six months before a further minimum of six months of bottle aging prior to release. It is bottled in a lightweight bottle produced in Sicily, made primarily from recycled glass.
Grape Varieties
This wine is made from 100% Nero d'Avola.
