Vinum

Open, smoky, cool in expression, with ripe fruit and spicy notes; straightforward, fresh, less opulent than last year, with fine tannins and plenty of red fruit as well as blood orange zest on the finish; austere finale.

Decanter

With aromas of ripe red and dark fruit and smoky and spicy notes, the attack is bright and intense, with a more linear mid-palate, not as opulent as last year to be sure, but with attractive precision and energy, although the tannins harden and dry a bit on the finish. Let’s see how the wine develops after ageing - in 60% new oak. A conservative score for now.

Cask sample. Harmonious, with juicy fruit and fine, integrated tannins. Fresh, clean and appetising. Classic St-Émilion but it won’t shake the world. (JL)

Round, fruity, rich, and dark, with loads of chocolate-covered black cherries, licorice, flowers, and spice. The ripe, sweet, round, creamy finish really works this year. The wine blends 84% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2027-2040. 91-93 pts.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Dark forest-berry fruit with a savory tobacco and herbal note in the background, orange zest. Medium complexity, ripe cherries, vivid tannins, somewhat dry on the finish, a hint of nougat on the aftertaste.

Intense, spicy, with high levels of freshness and rosebud notes, good aromatics. It starts at full intensity but then opens nicely through the mid-palate, showing energy, juiciness, and balance.

Vertdevin

The nose is beautifully crafted, precise, fine, elegant, and aromatic, with a delicate touch of noble austerity. It reveals notes of violet, blackberry and, more lightly, dense small fruits, combined with a hint of graphite, black pepper, and a discreet touch of lily. The palate is fruity and offers juiciness, smoothness, a mineral backbone, good definition, a certain indulgence, and accuracy. It shows notes of juicy/pulpy blackberry and violet and, more lightly, bright purple plum, joined by touches of almost roasted red berries, as well as hints of star anise, sage, and a subtle floral note with almost aromatic herbs in the background. The tannins are plush, sapid, and gourmand. A subtle hint of fresh coffee on the finish

Characteristics and tasting tips of Couvent des Jacobins 2023

Tasting

Resonating with the vintages of 2008 or 2016, this 2023 combines aromatic richness, tension, freshness and balance.

The complexity and structure of a great red wine from Saint-Émilion

The estate

It is in a real jewel, hidden from view but in the heart of Saint-Émilion that the Couvent des Jacobins is discovered. A true memory of the small medieval city, the Couvent des Jacobins was built in the 13th century. The estate is thus renowned for the production of its wines for nearly seven centuries. Since 2010, Xavier Jean has been at the head of the estate, thus perpetuating the history of this emblematic property of the appellation.

The vineyard

With an area of 10.7 hectares, the vineyard of the Couvent des Jacobins extends over 4 different categories of soils: the limestone rock located to the east of Saint-Émilion, the clayey-sandy on calcic molasses from Fronsadais (south-west), the clayey-sandy on iron slag subsoils (south-west) and the clay-limestone (on the north-east plateau of the village). The Couvent des Jacobins 2023 comes from vines whose age varies between 8 and 61 years. The estate is certified in organic farming with the use of complementary biodynamic solutions.

Vinification and ageing

The manually harvested grapes are subject to a double sorting on the vine and on the table in the cellar. 100% gravity parcel vinification. Pre-fermentation maceration, total maceration of 22 to 35 days. Reasoned extraction based on tastings and vinification of the petit verdot accompanied by manual punch-downs. The ageing of 12 to 15 months is carried out in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new and 60% of which are barrels of one wine.
