Description
A prestigious limited edition collection from Château Pavie
The Estate
The origins of this estate in the Bordeaux wine region are very ancient. Vines have been cultivated on the slopes of what is today Château Pavie since the 4th century. Owned by Chantal and Gérard Perse since March 1998, Château Pavie, a Premier Grand Cru Classé “A”, has one of the finest terroirs of Saint-Émilion. Château Pavie is renowned for the structure and elegance of its wines, resulting from yield management best suited to the terroir, at around 31 hl/ha.
The Vineyard
The vineyard of Château Pavie consists of a single block of 37 hectares, making it one of the largest Premiers Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion. Situated on the south-east side of the Saint-Émilion hill, the vineyard is laid out over three levels up the slope, with vines averaging 49 years of age. The “plateau” (85 metres elevation) features clay-limestone soil over fossiliferous limestone, the mid-slope (55 metres elevation) has fine-textured brown clay-limestone soil, while the “foot of the slope” comprises sandy to sandy-clay soils with an iron pan between 60 and 80 cm and sandy-gravel soils. Particular attention is paid to the vineyard, including a replanting plan, trellis height adjustments to increase leaf surface, specific pruning based on vine age, cluster thinning and leaf stripping.
The Wine
Château Pavie unveils with the 2019 vintage a new edition of its “Collection Aliénor”, each case individually numbered*.
Named after Aliénor of Aquitaine, Queen of France then England, married to King Louis VII at Bordeaux’s Saint-André Cathedral and mother of Richard the Lionheart, this set is a refined invitation to (re)discover, once a year and in various formats, a vintage released five years earlier. Since the 2000 vintage, Château Pavie has bottled it in an “Aliénor” bottle, whose sloping shoulders, truncated shape and deep punt echo historic bottles while ensuring optimal ageing. To celebrate its classification as a Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” in 2012, Château Pavie has also used the same format for its magnums since that date. Each numbered case of the “Collection Aliénor” contains four elegant formats of this Château Pavie 2019. With exquisite refinement, each presentation case was crafted in the workshops of a local partner, ADAM, certified “Entreprise du patrimoine vivant.”
Bottle, magnum, double magnum, Imperiale… four opportunities to (re)discover this 2019 vintage in an exceptional limited edition set. A rare and prestigious collection.
