Description
The style of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé magnified by a great vintage
The estate
Located near the Premiers Crus Clos Fourtet and Beau-Séjour Bécot, the Château Grand-Pontet has belonged to the Pourquet-Bécot family since 1980. Managed by Sylvie Pourquet-Bécot, this magnificent Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé with its exceptional limestone terroir enjoys an international reputation and produces very accomplished wines that delight the most discerning connoisseurs of the appellation.
The vineyard
Located on the plateau of the west bank of Saint-Émilion, the vineyard of Château Grand-Pontet covers an area of 14 hectares, of which 12.72 are in production. The vines, with an average age of 42 years, are planted on shallow soils over limestone bedrock, clay-limestone and clay-sandy soils. The vineyard is managed with a biocontrol approach. The domain’s planting is dominated by merlot (70%), complemented by cabernet franc (17.5%), cabernet sauvignon (7.5%) and malbec (5%).
Vinification and aging
After the manual harvest, which took place from September 21 to September 30 with a selection of the best berries directly in the parcels, the grapes are brought to the cellar for a second sorting. The berries pass over a vibrating table at the entrance of the winery. The harvest is destemmed and not crushed, with low extraction carried out at a moderate temperature. The grapes ferment in vats for 30 days at a temperature between 22 and 28 degrees. Finally, the wine is aged in barrels, 30% new.
Blend
Château Grand-Pontet 2020 is a blend of merlot (77.5%), cabernet franc (17.5%) and malbec (5%).
