Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Château d'Yquem 1953

Tasting Notes

Colour
The colour reveals a hue ranging from intense old gold to deep amber, adorned with mahogany and coppery highlights, while retaining a beautiful brilliance.

Nose
Remarkably complex, the bouquet exudes aromas of candied fruits such as dried apricot and orange marmalade, intertwined with tertiary notes of honey, blond caramel, and gentle spices like saffron and cinnamon.

Palate
The unctuous, enveloping attack reveals a perfectly integrated sweetness, supported by a refreshing acidic backbone. The creamy texture unfolds into a remarkably long finish, marked by touches of candied orange zest and hazelnut.

Food and Wine Pairing

This great wine pairs wonderfully with pan-seared foie gras, noble poultry in cream sauce, or shellfish such as lobster with a citrus sauce. It also enhances blue-veined cheeses like Roquefort, as well as lightly sweetened fruit or almond desserts.

Serving and Cellaring

To fully appreciate the Château d'Yquem 1953, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14 °C in a tulip-shaped glass, allowing for gentle aeration before tasting. With an exceptional ageing potential that can exceed a century, this vintage can be enjoyed until around 2053.

The Timeless Elegance of a Premier Cru Supérieur from Sauternes by Château d'Yquem

The Estate

Located at the heart of the Bordeaux region, Château d'Yquem is a legendary estate whose modern winemaking history began in 1593. As the sole and unique Premier Cru Supérieur of the 1855 classification, it embodies the absolute excellence of French sweet wines. Now owned by the LVMH group and managed by Lorenzo Pasquini under the presidency of Pierre Lurton, the estate combines a centuries-old aristocratic heritage with an advanced environmental approach. Renowned worldwide, the château produces wines of unrivalled longevity and complexity, symbols of French luxury and craftsmanship.

The Vineyard

Rising to the highest point of the Sauternes appellation, the vineyard extends across a mosaic of gravel on the surface and clay underneath. This unique terroir benefits from a century-old drainage network and an exceptional microclimate. The morning mists generated by the Ciron river encourage the steady development of noble rot, essential for concentrating the grapes. The estate applies extremely low yields, limited to around one glass of wine per vine.

The Vintage

The 1953 vintage stands out as a classic and highly successful year for the estate, at a time when vineyard work was entirely manual. The conditions made it possible to reach a level of quality meeting the estate's strict standards, thus avoiding the declassification suffered by other vintages of that decade.

Winemaking and Ageing

The creation of Château d'Yquem 1953 relies on meticulous manual harvesting through successive selective pickings, choosing only perfectly botrytised grapes. After gentle pressing, fermentation proceeded slowly thanks to indigenous yeasts in new French oak barrels. The wine then underwent an extended ageing period of around 36 months, shaping its structure and aromatic complexity.
