The estate
The House of Champagne Valentin Leflaive was born from the meeting of two great French traditions: the Burgundian know-how of the Leflaive family and the prestigious terroir of Champagne. Founded in 2015 by Olivier Leflaive, the celebrated winemaker of Puligny-Montrachet, the house was created with the desire to transpose the excellence and precision of great white Burgundies to the production of terroir-driven champagnes. The name Valentin belongs to Olivier’s son, born in 2007.
The approach is parcel-based, demanding, and resolutely focused on the expression of the Chardonnay grape variety, mainly sourced from the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger, etc.). Each cuvée reflects a unique identity, vinified in small volumes, with meticulous attention paid to aging (often partially in barrels), to low dosages, and to aromatic purity. Valentin Leflaive thus embodies a pure, elegant style aimed at lovers of signature wines.
The vineyard
This Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs CV 17 50 comes from three distinct terroirs of the Côte des Blancs: Vertus Premier Cru (52 %), Bergères les Vertus Premier Cru (27 %), and Cramant Grand Cru (21 %). The vines thrive on clay-limestone and Campanian chalk soils, benefiting from south and southeast exposures at altitudes ranging from 100 to 210 meters. Sustainable Champenoise viticulture guides vineyard management.
The letters define the grape variety and/or the parcel for each cuvée, while the numbers indicate the years of the reserve wines used as well as the dosage. Thus this cuvée was born from the parcels of Cramant and Vertus, 2017 is the year of the base blend, and finally 5,0 g is the sugar dosage per litre.
Winemaking and aging
Harvests are exclusively manual, followed by fractional pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with 34 months of aging on lees. The blend incorporates 19 % reserve wines. This Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs was disgorged on March 8, 2021.
Varietal
100 % Chardonnay.
