Organic Champagne : Key Points

Following the trend that is shaking up the wine world, organic Champagne is experiencing strong development, particularly among young winegrowers and small-scale producers. It was in the 1970s that Champagne winegrowers decided to switch to organic viticulture. In 2015, 127 Champagne estates were practising organic viticulture, representing a surface area of 523 hectares of vines, i.e. 2% of the total vineyard area, according to the Agence Bio.

To be eligible for organic certification, producers must wait until the fourth harvest year after conversion to organic farming. Since the new European regulation came into force on 1 August 2012, it is now possible to certify the production of organic champagnes.

Organic Champagne is the result of environmentally-friendly viticulture, excluding the use of chemical fertilisers and phytosanitary or synthetic products.

Numerous producers have begun producing organic and biodynamic Champagnes, such as the famous Louis Roederer, the Maison De Sousa and Larmandier-Bernier.
