Description
The richness and fruity texture of a red wine from Tuscany
The estate
Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Castello di Volpaia is a medieval treasure where time seems to have stood still. Its stone houses, cobbled streets, and fortified towers make this beautiful haven a small village frozen in time. Built in 1172, the estate stands as one of the most significant architectural testaments to the glory and prestige of the Chianti region. Owned by the Stianti Mascheroni family since the 1970s, Castello di Volpaia boasts an exceptional vineyard spanning 46 hectares. Organic farming, massale selection, and indigenous clones—the estate tends to its vines with the utmost care.
The vineyard
Located at an altitude of between 1,400 and 1,600 feet, the Tuscan vineyard benefits from a southwest exposure, allowing for optimal sunlight and resulting in highly concentrated berries. The vines are Guyot-trained to maximize the berries' exposure to the sun and improve airflow around the clusters. The soil is predominantly composed of sandstone.
The wine
Castello di Volpaia's Balifico 2020 draws its inspiration from the Super Tuscans, resulting in a remarkable wine that does not follow the traditional DOC rules, but instead aligns with the quality standards of the IGT designation attributed to Super Tuscans.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage began with a relatively mild winter and spring, leading to early budbreak and flowering. Despite a dry winter, rainfall in May and June allowed the vines to withstand a summer marked by intense heat.
Winemaking and aging
The wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
Blend
Sangiovese (65%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (35%)
