Trentino-Alto Adige Wines : Key Points

Located in the far north of Italy and less well known than its neighbour Veneto, the vineyards of Trentino-Alto Adige are embedded in a mountainous landscape where only a tiny fraction of the soil is suitable for the cultivation of vines. The steep slopes and terraces, which form the basis of the region's wine identity, force winegrowers to focus on the quality of their wines, rather than the quantity. The two main production areas in this region are DOC Trentino and DOC Alto Adige. Around two-thirds of the production is white wine, with varieties such as Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay that thrive in the hillsides and Alpine climates, leading to the production of fragrant wines. The red wines are cultivated in the rare plains. There are some international red varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, but the flagship varieties are undoubtedly the indigenous ones, such as the powerful and highly structured Lagrein and Teroldego, varieties that produce some of the greatest red wines in northern Italy. A must-know region and utterly delicious wines.
