Penfolds : Grange 2016

The most famous of the great Australian wines once again reveals its grandiose character

The estate
Named New World Winery of the Year in 2013 by the prestigious magazine Wine Enthusiast, the Penfolds estate had already established itself as an emblem of great wines from Australia at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to the unparalleled determination of Mary Penfold. Indeed, the co-founder of Penfolds Winery devoted herself body and soul to crafting exceptional wines. This lifelong endeavor culminated in the estate establishing itself as a benchmark in Southern Australia. When Max Schubert joined the Penfolds adventure in the 1950s, he infused the estate's wines with the elegance of the great wines of Bordeaux that fascinated him so much. Success was not long in coming when the winemaker created his celebrated Grange cuvée, which crossed Australian borders to win over wine lovers the world over.

The vineyard
The 2016 Grange is crafted from several parcels of the Penfolds estate located across different regions: Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Magill Estate, and McLaren Vale. The wine is therefore a reflection of a selection of Australia's finest terroirs, while remaining, above all, deeply marked by the Penfolds house style.

The vintage
The year 2016 began with a cool winter across all of South Australia. Then, a rainy spring led to a slight delay in flowering. Conversely, the hot and very sunny summer accelerated berry development. Much-needed rains relieved the vines in January and February and boosted their yield. The grapes therefore ripened evenly, developing a flavorful aromatic expression and firm tannins. The year 2016 is undoubtedly a vintage that perfectly combines quality and quantity.

Winemaking and aging
After the harvest and fermentation stage, the wine is aged for 18 months in American oak hogsheads.

Syrah (97%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%).

Appearance
The 2016 Grange boasts a dark yet vibrant hue, adorned with violet nuances.
Nose
The explosive bouquet offers an incredible harmony between aromas of candied fig, black plum, and licorice, alongside notes of soy, sesame, and grilled meat. The nose is imbued with great freshness. The Grange style is instantly recognizable.
Palate
Grange 2016 beautifully translates its aromas into flavors. The power and freshness of the nose are also felt on the palate. Notes of wild berries elevate the dark chocolate undertones. The finish is impressively long. A remarkable Grange.

Serving and aging potential
Grange 2016 is already a true pleasure to drink and will remain highly enjoyable until 2065.
