Description
An icon of Australian wines
World-renowned, Grange de Penfolds is one of the most famous wines from Australia. This wine even holds the official status of "Heritage Icon of South Australia".
This cuvée, created in 1951, is the result of a blend crafted from fully ripe Shiraz (98%), complemented by a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon (2%). In this way, Grange celebrates the art of blending according to Penfolds, combining grapes from different plots and from various winegrowing regions within the Southern Australia zone: Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, Magill Estate. For this 2014 vintage, grapes from Wrattonbully were included in the blend for the first time. Grange 2014 de Penfolds was aged for 20 months in American oak barrels.
A magnificent vintage for Australia, 2014 gave rise to outstanding Shiraz wines, from grapes showing lovely acidity and vibrant fruit.
On tasting, Grange 2014 de Penfolds displays a superb garnet-red color. Complex, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes evoking umami flavor, with subtle hints of smoked meat emerging. Then, dried-herb notes suggesting thyme and sage punctuate the aromatic profile before giving way to primary notes of red fruit and oak. A true mosaic of fruity, licorice-tinged flavors, the palate captivates with its generous, expansive texture, revealing perfectly sculpted tannins with a dense, tight grain. The oak notes from the maturation impart a subtle spicy character. Balanced and powerful, the wine continues to unfold on the palate, delivering delightful tactile sensations. A sublime expression of terra rossa and limestone soils, Grange 2014 de Penfolds will be enjoyable from 2020 onwards, with the promise of superb evolution in the cellar through 2045.
