Description
Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 Lucien Le Moine: Tasting Notes and Serving Recommendations
Tasting
Color
The wine shows a deep, saturated red hue, with ruby to garnet reflections that hint at the ripeness of the vintage, while remaining translucent enough to let light pass through the glass.
Nose
The nose opens with a dense layering of black and red fruit, underscored by violet and other floral nuances, fine spice, and a mineral edge reminiscent of cold stone. Subtle notes of fine, well-integrated oak add a touch of toasted character without masking the purity of the terroir.
Palate
The palate is robust and sophisticated, built on a muscular yet energetic structure. Firm, fine-grained tannins support a dense core of fruit, while a lively acidity keeps the whole ensemble in tension. The finish is remarkably long, carrying the fruit, spice, and mineral impressions well beyond the first sip.
Food and wine pairings
The Mazis-Chambertin 2020 Lucien Le Moine pairs beautifully with roasted game birds and red meats, duck preparations, and dishes built around mushrooms or black truffle. Aged, firm cheeses also make a fitting match once the wine has had a little time in bottle.
Serving and cellaring
The Mazis-Chambertin 2020 Lucien Le Moine is best served at a temperature of around 16 to 18°C (61–64°F), ideally after decanting to allow its aromatic layers to unfold. Given its dense structure and the absence of fining or filtration, this is a wine built for the cellar, though no official aging window has been communicated for this specific vintage.
Other characteristics
This cuvée is bottled under natural cork in the traditional 750 ml format, with an alcohol content of approximately 14%, reflecting the ripeness achieved during the 2020 growing season.
A grand cru pinot noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, shaped by the Lucien Le Moine house style
The Estate
Lucien Le Moine is a small négociant-éleveur house founded in 1999 in Beaune, Burgundy, by Mounir Saouma and Rotem Brakin. Owning no vineyards of its own, the house selects only grand cru and premier cru musts from growers across the Côte d'Or, which it then raises in its own cellar. Still run today by its two founders as a deliberately small, hands-on operation, Lucien Le Moine caps its annual production at around 100 barrels, earning a reputation as a "haute couture" négociant known for meticulous, artisanal aging.
The Vineyard
Mazis-Chambertin is a grand cru climat located within the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation in the Côte de Nuits. It is one of the nine red grand crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, planted on limestone and marl soils characteristic of this stretch of the Côte d'Or, known for producing pinot noirs of notable power and aromatic depth.
The Vintage
The 2020 growing season in Burgundy combined notable ripeness with enough underlying freshness to preserve balance in the resulting wines. This interplay between concentration and vitality gave wines with rich fruit and solid aging potential, a profile reflected in the Mazis-Chambertin 2020.
Winemaking and aging
In keeping with the house's practices, the Mazis-Chambertin 2020 Lucien Le Moine undergoes slow fermentation in a naturally cool, humid cellar, followed by extended aging on its lees, typically between 16 and 24 months, without fining or filtration. This approach, carried out using fine-grain oak barrels, allows the wine to clarify naturally over time while preserving density, aromatic precision, and long-term aging potential.
