Vinum

Luminous ruby; on the nose, ripe blackcurrant fruit, charred wood, plums, fennel; silky on the palate, refined, balanced, not overly concentrated, showing finesse and precision; pleasantly long finish, ending peppery-spicy and very fresh.

63% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon. 45 hl/ha. Cask sample. Attractive red-fruit nose with a hint of vanilla oak. Supple and gourmand with freshness and delicate tannins. A serious wine with a light-hearted edge. (JL)

Le Figaro Vin

A gentle, penetrating nose of crunchy black fruit, like a soloist’s voice rising across the countryside. Then, in the background, delicate notes of flower petals in the rain emerge. On the palate, sublime finesse and precision. The freshness and tension on the palate convey a sense of energy, while the tannins softly caress the palate. The intense fruit carries through to a juicy, persistent finish.

Clearly skilful construction of the wines here, with precision and balance. Austerity on the finish, as is classic in Cabernet-dominant wines in 2024, with emphasis on cassis bud and slate, very pretty. 3.55 pH. 45hl/ha yield, 20% new oak. Harvest 23 September to 9 October. Deep red color with black highlights. The nose is discreet at first, becoming more suave as the glass is swirled. The palate is full and irresistibly seductive, with nuances of ripe fruit and a fine, silky richness. Blend: 63% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon. Alcohol: 13.2% - pH: 3.55. Yield: 45 hl/ha.

Espresso, flowers, plums, and black raspberries form the core of this medium-bodied, open, fruity, cherry-tinted wine that is going to be good to go shortly after release. The wine is a blend of 63% Merlot, with 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.2% ABV, 3.55 pH. Drink from 2027-2040. 90-92 Pts

Description

The finesse and creaminess of a Second Wine from Saint-Estèphe

The property

Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood from one bank to the other of the Garonne. And at the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate as a wedding gift, added his name to it, thus giving birth to the label of this 3rd grand cru classé from Saint-Estèphe.

The Château Calon-Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century, until 2012, when the property was bought by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce wines with an inimitable style marked by the seal of the appellation.

Château Calon Ségur has also become famous with its label adorning the bottles of the property. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed been the symbol of the property and pays tribute to this phrase of the Marquis de Ségur: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon". For nearly three centuries, lovers of Château Calon Ségur continue to remain loyal to this iconic property of the appellation.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Calon Ségur extends over an area of 55 hectares, of which 48 hectares are in production. Planted on a thick layer of Garonne gravels dating from the Quaternary with a thin layer of lacustrine clay on top, the vines, which are 21 years old on average, give birth to a great Saint-Estèphe wine.

The wine

Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is the Second Wine of Château Calon Ségur.

The vintage

The winter of 2023-2024 was mild and rainy. The flowering, in June, took place in dry and temperate weather. The summer, slightly cool and not very deficient in water, allowed a serene growth of the vine. In September, sustained rains and cool temperatures required increased vigilance, but the clay soils favored good maturation.

Vinification and aging

Maceration of 20 days. The aging is for a period of 17 months in barrels (of which 20% are new).

Blend

Le Marquis de Calon Ségur 2024 is a blend of merlot (63%) and cabernet sauvignon (37%).
