Decanter

A ferrous nose with striking aromas of iron, strawberries and cherries. Clean and clear, this has an immediate brightness from the acidity which then settles with a chalky, iron grip towards the finish. Lots of sticky liquorice and cedar spice which will settle in time. Stops a little short but not too rich or intense, a lightly framed Pomerol. This has mellowed a lot from Primeurs and is now softer and more approachable.

The 2022 Clos René is a heady, old-school Pomerol. Dark cherry, worn-in leather, spice and tobacco fill in the layers. This sector in Pomerol, where soils are lighter and drier, was especially challenged in 2022. Consequently, the fruit profile here leans toward the slightly roasted side of the spectrum. All things considered, this is a strong showing for the year.

Chocolate and flowers, along with a core of sweet cherries, define the nose here. The palate is silky, fresh, supple, medium-bodied, and polished; the finish is soft, elegant, and showcases its core of ripe cherries and plums with ease and poise. Drink from 2025-2040.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Deep dark ruby in colour with purple reflections, and subtle brightening on the rim. On the nose a developed bouquet of sweet cherry, ripe plum, a touch of fig and candied orange zest. On the palate, the wine has pronounced, supporting tannins, with notes of sweet fig, dark nougat and a sweet, chocolatey finish which tends towards a riper, late-harvest style with less freshness.

A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec, the 2022 Clos René is forward, ripe, and textured, offering up ample red and black fruits, chocolate, loamy earth, and spice-driven aromatics. Supple and approachable, as well as medium-bodied on the palate, it has a slightly rustic feel but offers plenty of charm. Aged in oak barrels, this should drink well for 12-15 years.

The Malbec adds a deeply spiced note, and this is very much about black cherry, black pepper, and grilled tar, skirting on the edge of volatile. Aged with 20% new oak.

Le Figaro Vin

An intriguing bouquet, marked by small black berries and animal notes. On the palate, it proves deep, sweet, and flavorful, showing a character all its own.

Description

The character of a Pomerol red wine

The estate

With ancient origins, Clos René was formerly called "Reney" on the map of the engineer-geographer Pierre de Belleyme. The estate has been in the same family for several generations. It is now run by Jean-Marie Garde.

The vineyard

Clos René 2022 is a Pomerol wine produced from a 16-hectare vineyard on the western slopes of the appellation's plateau. The vines are an average of 35 years old and are planted on gravel and sand soils dating back to the Quaternary period and resting on a subsoil of iron residue.

The vineyard is planted with Merlot (70%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Malbec (10%).

Winemaking and ageing

Vinification in temperature-controlled cement vats. Aged for 18 months in oak barrels.
