Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Very lush and forward, with creamed pear, warm peach melba and hazelnut notes set against a backdrop of warm piecrust. Bold and broad through the finish. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Drink now through 2032. 1,666 cases made.

Decanter

Located in Bommes, this estate has produced a luxurious wine with apricot and nectarine sweetness, lovely strands of saffron, and an opulent texture. It does lack a little definition and needs a healthy shot of acidity.

Sweet honeyed tropical fruit, vanilla and honeysuckle with a touch of candied citrus peel invite you to delve a little deeper into the wine. The acidity is there to liven up all the honeyed tropical fruits.

Bright light golden colour. Lovely intensity with layers of candied citrus, grape, ripe yellow fruit, floral notes, saffron, Earl Grey, fine oak and some pastry notes. The palate is dense and powerful with a fine balance between sweetness and freshness, flavours of baked apricot, confit de citron followed by a very long, pure finish.

The 2017 Clos Haut-Peyraguey showed brilliantly and is another stunning Sauternes from this great vintage. White peach, honeycomb, flowers, and plenty of botrytis notes all emerge from the glass, and it’s nicely textured and full-bodied, with a beautiful balance between its fruit and acidity. It’s already delicious yet should evolve for two decades.

Bright yellow gold. Complex bouquet with quince and greengage, followed by saffron and vanilla chocolate beans. Oily palate with plenty of power. I miss some finesse; it feels a bit too hefty. Finish of orange oil and mandarin jam. 17.5/20

Kunz barrel sample 18: mineral, fresh, closed bouquet, citrus, delicate lime notes, mint leaves, chalk, honey. Balanced, creamy palate with pronounced sweetness, broad, creamy structure, good acidity, powerful aromatics, long, plush finish.

Silky, creamy, finely opulent, powerful bouquet of cooked pears, chalk, mint, citrus. A silkier, creamier, well-opulent palate with dense fruit, pronounced sweetness, fine acidity, diverse aromatics, and a long, dense finish. 18/20 2024 - 2048

Pale golden-yellow with greenish highlights. Bouquet of good intensity marked by floral notes and a touch of caramel. Dense, creamy, and lively attack. Lovely tension on the palate where opulence and vibrancy are in harmony. The wine is a bit restrained but has the substance and potential to move forward.

The nose is fruity, fresh, elegant, nicely racy and offers a refined minerality. It reveals notes of lemon, yuzu zest and, more subtly, quince, combined with fine touches of crisp white fruits, very delicate hints of flowers (peach blossom, white flowers), as well as a discreet hint of white tea and gunflint. The palate is fruity, balanced, nicely racy and offers a juicy/tangy backbone, lovely refined minerality, fine creaminess, precision, a fine grain and gourmandise. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of candied apple, candied peach and, more subtly, lemon, combined with touches of zest, crunchy pineapple, as well as fine hints of flowers (peach blossom, white flowers), white tea, honey and discreet hints of spice. A very discreet hint of almond lingers on the finish. A lovely wine!

Light yellow color with green highlights. Moderately aromatic nose, fruity and creamy. Very lovely entry on the palate bursting with fruit, developing into a flavorful mid-palate with a hint of mint. However, the body remains medium. Well-flavored finish.

James Suckling

A Sauternes with lovely harmony and finesse, with dried fruit, mushrooms and peaches. Some pears, too. This is very subtle. Medium-bodied with beautiful sweetness (not too much) and a creamy texture. Shows length and finesse. Drinkable now, yet it will last a very long time.

Description

A harmonious, lively and expressive Sauternes wine

The estate

With its first harvest carried out in 1618, Clos Haut-Peyraguey is a historic property in Sauternes. A Sauternes First Growth of 1855, this property is also the smallest in the appellation, with a surface of just 8.5 hectares. Located on the highest areas of the Bommes hill, the Clos Haut-Peyraguey takes its name from Peyraguey which means hill or promontory. Acquired in 2012 by Bernard Magrez, Clos Haut-Peyraguey is one of the most beautiful classified growths of Sauternes.

The vineyard

Located in Bommes, this must-know reference among Sauternes wines, reigns over a single-block vineyard of 8.5 hectares, located opposite Château d'Yquem. The vines are 40 years old on average and are planted on gravelly-sandy soils and rest on clay subsoils. The vineyard is managed using integrated viticultural practices.

Vinification and ageing

The blend

Sémillon (95%)
