These are interwoven with captivating floral notes, particularly rose, along with sweet spices, sandalwood and star anise. The whole gains in complexity thanks to mineral touches of graphite, pencil lead and warm earth.
Palate
The attack displays great freshness, introducing a caressing and particularly smooth texture. The substance is dense, full and shows superb harmony, extending into a finish with beautiful energy and remarkable length.
Food and wine pairings
This great red wine will pair wonderfully with flavourful red meats, game dishes or a platter of aged cheeses.
The excellence of a Pessac-Léognan grand cru
The estate
Located in Martillac, in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards, the renowned Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a history that dates back to 1365. This iconic estate leaves a lasting impression with its exceptional terroir. Owned by the Cathiard family since 1990, the estate spans 78 hectares of vines and belongs to the circle of Graves Grands Crus Classés. The property stands out for its unique Bio Précision approach, combining organic and biodynamic farming to create wines of great renown.
The vineyard
Established in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the vineyard rests on a naturally drained mound, made up of Günzian gravel and semi-precious pebbles. This unique soil creates a mirror effect that promotes grape ripening and forces the roots to plunge deep down. The vines, averaging 49 years old, are cultivated according to the principles of organic and biodynamic farming. The estate also preserves its genetic diversity thanks to a nursery located on the protected ecosystem of the Île de Lalande.
The wine
This 2025 vintage features a special label, in memory of Daniel Cathiard, who passed away at the beginning of 2026.
Winemaking and aging
To craft this 2025 vintage, the grapes undergo a rigorous double sorting before and after destemming. Vinification takes place with whole berries, partially incorporating whole bunches. Extraction is carried out through gentle punch-downs and pump-overs, with long macerations maintained between 26 and 28 °C, the duration of which is adjusted for each vat to preserve the precision of the wine. Aging then takes place on the lees for 18 months in barrels, 50% of which are new and come from the cooperage integrated within the estate. A single racking is carried out during this period.
Grape varieties
68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
