Description
A typical and aromatic Pessac-Leognan red wine
The estate
Built in the middle of the 18th-century by the architect La Clotte, Chateau Picque Caillou has joyfully spanned through the ages. Owned by the Calvet family since 1997, this estate has the particular feature of being part of a small circle of castles – six, to be precise – located, today, within the Bordeaux ring road. Like Chateau Haut-Brion or even Chateau Pape-Clement, the estate has withstood the city’s advances on its peaceful lands and continues to offer Bordeaux wines which combine elegance and purity.
The vineyard
In the Pessac-Leognan appellation, Chateau Picque Caillou comprises 21 hectares of red and white grape varieties that are deeply rooted in a Günzian gravel soil and cradled by the region’s typical mild oceanic climate. Chateau Picque Caillou 2020 stems from a 17-hectare vineyard composed of red grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot) that belong to the estate.
Vinification and aging
Following the harvest, which began on September 28th with the Merlot grapes and ended on October 18th with the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot varieties, the grapes were taken to the cellar, where they commenced the vinification process under the supervision of Mrs Valerie Lavigne. During the last 15 days of December 2021, the wines complete their fermentation and are bottled. The wine is then aged for one year in barrels, 40% of which are new, 30% of which are second fill barrels and 30% of which are third fill barrels.
The blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (60%),
Merlot (30%)
Petit Verdot (10%).
