Chateau Meyney 2015

The core of dark plum and cherry fruit has good flesh for the vintage, though this is decidedly austere, with iron, singed alder and bay leaf notes holding sway through the finish, ending on the taut and woodsy side. A bit of cellaring will help, but this is unlikely to harmonize fully. Best from 2020 through 2027. 17,000 cases made.

Leathery cassis fruit and broad – even massive – ripeness in the Meyney style. Will be very good with a bit of age.

Impressive dark-cherry and dark-plum aromas with nicely delivered spices and chocolate to boot. The palate is very vibrant, very juicy and fresh, with a pure profile and dark-cherry flavors that stay bright. Very approachable Saint-Estèphe. Try from 2020.

Much darker in colour than the Ch Blaignan Médoc 2015. Blackish aubergine-skin colour. Grilled blackcurrants on the nose. Dark and solid, almost inky, with palpable heat. Packed with ripe blackcurrants, a layer of ash, and firmly corseted in dry, determined tannins. Good freshness on the finish, but it’s a little surly at the moment. (TC)

The 2015 Meyney is terrific. There is lovely depth to the black cherry, graphite, smoke and earthy flavors. This is an especially supple, fruity style for Saint-Estèphe, and yet there is more than enough underlying structure to give the wine backbone, persistence and a good deal of explosive energy as well.

The wine is medium-bodied, soft, polished, forward, and delivers its red fruits, tobacco, cedar, and spicy cherries with little effort. Give this just a few years and it will show great.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot. Extremely dark purple with lilac and violet highlights. A powerfully impressive bouquet from the very first moment: plenty of blackberry, black plum, dark noble woods, and initial hints of tobacco. On the palate, the aromatic fascination continues seamlessly: deep, baroque, powerful, yet with well-suited tannins that have reached full maturity. Long-lasting finish.

WITH MONTROSE AT THE TOP OF SAINT-ESTÈPHE Incredible Meyney! Whether the 2015 vintage is a winemaker’s year or should be declared a terroir year will probably always be debated. With this fabulous Meyney, it’s likely both. Since 1999 I have consistently rated every vintage at 17 to 18 points. This time it’s the best Meyney I have ever tasted in my life. If you’re budget‑conscious and want to buy a truly great wine, you should definitely put it on your shopping list! 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 52% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot. Extremely dark purple with lilac and violet highlights. A hugely impressive bouquet from the very first moment: lots of blackberries, black plums, dark noble woods and the first tobacco contours. On the palate, the nasal fascination continues seamlessly: deep, baroque, powerful, but with well‑judged tannins that have reached high maturity, with a persistent finish. Have I ever tasted such a brilliant Meyney? Lately there has been a series of successes rated extremely highly. This year I have no hesitation in counting it (not for the first time) among the very greatest Saint‑Estèphe wines. Tasted four times, the last during a spontaneous visit to the Château itself. There will be no better value buy in Saint‑Estèphe this year! 17: Tasted again at the Château during a vertical. The color seems a bit lighter than one would expect for the vintage. Medium garnet with ruby highlights at the rim. Open bouquet, showing rich fruit tendencies of red and black plums, good depth, nicely expansive and already indicating harmony on the nose. On the palate, soft yet demanding at the same time; the tannins show fine, grainy nuances on the tongue, giving the flow a certain character; the aromatic pressure could be a bit more intense on the finish. For the moment, it doesn’t feel like showing itself and turns a cold shoulder. By its makeup, it is a truly great Meyney. At en primeur I rated it 19/20. Right now, it delivers a solid 18/20. But as already written, it is currently introverted. This could also be a certain bottling shock. It will certainly pick up again! At the moment: 18/20. 18: Extremely dark wine‑red with almost black highlights in the center. Deep‑seated bouquet, black‑berry profile, notes of tar, Bakelite, turpentine, indicating a subtle minerality. Meaty palate, compact, demanding, showing plenty of reserves. A small block with great potential. Perhaps somewhat underestimated in its current phase. By classification a Cru Bourgeois – as a wine already pushing into the midfield of the Grand Crus. Could even gain another point. Brilliant value! (19/20).

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2015 Meyney has pronounced notes of stewed plums and baked blackberries on the nose, with fried herbs, new leather, and pencil lead in the background. The medium-bodied palate is chewy, a little hollow, and herbal, with a rugged finish.

With the estate’s usual poise and fine definition, the 2015 is also plush and beautifully integrated.

The colour is deep and the nose shows beautiful complexity. The wine is broad with a full, generous mid-palate, lovely fruit, and real depth, currently finishing just a touch dry. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot.

Inviting bouquet of good intensity, revealing notes of licorice and blackberries. Lively, creamy character on the palate. The wine has a structure that ensures freshness and a touch of vigor, while the tannins build breadth yet show a firm side; with a meal, it will go down a treat.

Fruity, pleasant, soft, flavorful wine with medium body and length.

92–94. Barrel Sample. This wine is poised between great fruits and firm tannins. It has both in abundance, bursting with black currant flavors and lively acidity.
