Description

A red wine from Pomerol revealed by Chateau Mazeyres

The estate

Located in the heart of Libourne, Chateau Mazeyres is an iconic property of the Pomerol appellation, on the right bank of Bordeaux. The estate boasts ancient origins, dating back to Roman times. Since 1992, Alain Moueix has been managing Chateau Mazeyres with great talent and passion, applying a great expertise and know-how to his wines.

The vineyard

The Chateau Mazeyres vineyard covers 23.82 hectares of vines in the heart of the Pomerol appellation in an exceptional terroir. The vines have been cultivated biodynamically since 2012 with the Biodyvin certification by Ecocert, obtained in 2018. The Chateau Mazeyres vineyard is located on the western and southern terraces of the appellation, on 3 different types of soil: fine clay, clayey sand and gravelly-sandy clay. The unique nature of these soils gives the wines of Chateau Mazeyres a unique personality and a velvety mouthfeel.

The vintage

A vintage of contrasts, 2020 began with an exceptionally rainy winter, followed by a spring with hot and humid conditions which encouraged strong mildew pressure. Flowering was random depending on grape varieties, terroirs and weather conditions. Although summer was marked by dry and hot weather, rainy spells in mid-August salvaged the vineyard. The combination of all of these conditions led to a reduction in yields. Having started earlier than other years, it was possible to harvest very ripe berries, imparting a beautiful generosity to this vintage.

Winemaking and aging

Aging is carried out up to 54% in barrels and tuns and 46% in 7hl ovoid, concrete vats, in amphorae and in small vats.

Blend

The 2020 Chateau Mazeyres is made of a blend of Merlot (72.5%), Cabernet Franc (25%) and Petit Verdot (2.5%).
