Vinum

A particularly full-bodied wine, notably fruity and fleshy for the estate, also showing juiciness and freshness: pop in the style of the vintage yet harmonious and excellently crafted.

Decanter

Strict black fruits, rose petals, redcurrants and black cherries. Quite serious, but a creamy mid-palate; soft and gentle within a sleek frame. Lovely energy, red fruit, minerals, you can feel the liquorice and clove, and a touch of heat on the finish. Initial burst of red fruits, quite wide and generous but focuses and narrows. This is nicely styled.

Cask sample. Plenty of dark fruits, red fruits, wet tobacco and damp earth aromas. There's a note of cooked fruit but then a decent lick of acidity and freshness on the palate. Densely packed tannins around a sleek, opulent core of ripe raspberries and well-integrated oak. Rounded in style but nicely put together, showing finesse and elegance. (AC)

Vinous

The 2020 Mazeyres has a clean and pure bouquet, one of the more floral in style from Pomerol, red cherries commingling with wild strawberry and pressed rose petals. This is quite elegant. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, hints of white pepper and allspice emerging towards its satisfying finish. This is a classy Pomerol from Alain Moueix.

Flowers, spice, red cherries, and red plums shine in the perfume. The wine is medium-bodied, soft, silky, and elegant, with freshness, refinement, and loads of spicy, fresh, vibrant red pit fruits with hints of strawberries and pepper that come in on the finish. Drink from 2024-2035.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Deep dark ruby, purple reflections, narrow rim. Nuances of preserved cherry, a touch of nougat, fig and tangerine zest with a delicately savoury undercurrent. Juicy dark cherry fruit, silky texture, ripe tannins, mineral core, chocolaty finish, shows good length and ageing potential. Biodynamic, a new drive for quality is clearly evident.

Coming from some of the sandier soils in the appellation, the 2020 Château Mazeyres is perfumed and up-front, with a beautiful nose of ripe strawberries, framboise, spice, and flowers. It's not built around concentration or power but is ethereal, perfumed, complex, and medium-bodied, with soft tannins. It's as gulpable as they come and is a beautiful wine to drink over the coming decade.

A fresher, lighter take on 2020 with clear tar and smoke character. Supple and well-textured raspberry, enjoyable overall; as ever with this wine, less Pomerol signature than some of its siblings in the appellation, but it is a good-quality and enjoyable wine. 30 hl/ha yield, aged in a mix of barrels, larger oak casks, small concrete vats and amphora. First year with a touch of Petit Verdot in the blend. Certified organic and biodynamic.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Mazeyres rocks up with ready-to-go notes of baked plums, boysenberry preserves, and fruitcake, followed by hints of charcuterie, dried herbs, and cloves. The full-bodied palate is concentrated and chewy, with a lively line and a savory lift on the finish.

La RVF

If there is one style that truly stands out in the Pomerol landscape today, it is Mazeyres. This 2020 is simply dazzling—ripe without excess, endowed with a white-wine-like freshness that brings striking brilliance to the whole and deftly counterbalances the vintage’s power. The caressing touch is enhanced by a seamless texture, underscoring its harmony and flesh. Irresistible now, it will age serenely.

Le Figaro Vin

On the first nose, this biodynamically produced wine releases woody, toasty notes, then moves on to a second nose brimming with freshness. The palate is creamy, jammy, powerful and warm, yet also complex, with juiciness, vibrancy, a touch of oak, firm tannins and a mouthwatering finish.

Mazeyres’ customary freshness is indeed present, ideally wrapped in fruity nuances. The result is a harmonious, inviting bouquet. The attack is succulent and pleasant, bordering on sweetness. The wine is slender and refined, built on a sense of elegance and freshness. Very pertinent choices. Thank you for the wine!

Terre de Vins

We love the wide, fluid spectrum on the nose: floral notes, red fruits and pepper, plum jam, a touch of licorice and gentian. This is a wine of great finesse, flavorful and elegant. The palate feels weightless, with an airy texture, expressing fine spices and subtly earthy notes. We are literally between earth and sky. Mazeyres 2020 is flavorful, mouthwatering and sapid, marked by delicately lacy tannins with an ultra-fine grain. A beautiful success of the vintage.

Description

A red wine from Pomerol by Château Mazeyres

The estate

Located in the heart of Libourne, Château Mazeyres is an iconic property of the Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. The estate boasts ancient origins, dating back to Roman times. Since 1992, Alain Moueix has led Château Mazeyres with talent and passion, bringing his viticultural expertise and know-how.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Mazeyres covers 23.82 hectares of vines situated in the heart of the Pomerol appellation in an exceptional location. The vines have been cultivated biodynamically since 2012, with Biodyvin certification by Ecocert obtained in 2018. The vineyard of Château Mazeyres is planted on the western and southern terraces of the appellation, with three different types of terroir present. There are fine clay gravel soils, clayey sands, and gravelly-sandy clays. The uniqueness of these soils gives Château Mazeyres wines their distinctive personality and signature velvety mouthfeel.

The vintage

A vintage of contrasts, 2020 began with an exceptionally rainy winter followed by a warm, humid spring that encouraged high mildew pressure. Flowering was uneven depending on grape variety, terroir, and weather conditions. While the summer was marked by hot, dry weather, the mid-August rain episodes were a blessing for the vineyard. The combination of these factors led to lower yields. Harvesting began earlier than usual, allowing the picking of perfectly ripe berries and bringing great generosity to this vintage.

Vinification and aging

Aging took place in 54% barrels and large casks, and 46% in 7 hl egg-shaped concrete vats, amphorae, and small vats.

Blend

Château Mazeyres 2020 is a blend of merlot (72.5%), cabernet franc (25%), and petit verdot (2.5%).
