Robert Parker

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 La Lagune rolls out of the glass with notes of cherry pie, Black Forest cake and warm cassis plus hints of pencil lead, new leather and spice box. Medium-bodied, the palate has great vibrancy with loads of red berries and earthy layers and a firm, chewy frame, finishing lively.

Decanter

Classic balance of dark fruit with touches of oak and blue flowers. Powerful palate, spicy, rich and intense.

Elegant, fresh, forward, sweet and fruity, with a nice purity of red berries. You can enjoy it young for its refined styling, or age it to gain more floral complexity.

Falstaff

Deep dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening, dark nougat, a hint of herbal savouriness, some lovage, black cherries. Medium body, red cherries, integrated tannins, lemony touch, mineral and persistent, redcurrants on the finish.

La RVF

2017 plays on finesse and a very fine definition of its fruit. A wine with a gentle, easy-drinking profile, yet also endowed with persistence.

Red fruits and spices. Beautifully fruity expression. Lively, gourmand attack. Creamy and balanced on the palate. Fruity, persistent finish.

The nose is fruity, structured, and offers subtle straightness. It reveals notes of blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and fine touches of wild strawberry/berries, lily/subtle varietal nuances, along with hints of licorice, spices, and discreet touches of tobacco. The palate is fruity, balanced, finely tight, and offers delicate juiciness, good definition, smoothness, tension, linearity, precision, minerality, finesse, a touch of roundness, beautiful fine grain, harmony, and a hint of velvety texture. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy blackcurrant and, more lightly, wild strawberry and wild raspberry, combined with fine touches of blackberry, small berries, spices, licorice, as well as subtle toasted hints, very discreet floral nuances (in the background), tonka bean (in the background), and a very discreet hint of almond (in the background). The tannins are fine, supple, and elegant. Good persistence. The finish and persistence are a little tight. (2022/2024)

Jean-Marc Quarin

Intense, lively color. Lovely, highly perfumed nose, pure and precise, with nuances that are more floral than fruity. Appetizing. The palate follows the same register with a medium body and a fine balance that lets the aromas shine, while the tannin is well wrapped. Decanting suits it well. Nevertheless, I had found it more fleshy en primeur.

Description

An Elegant and Precise Grand Cru Classe from Medoc

Led by the talented and passionate Caroline Frey, Chateau La Lagune is a 3rd Classified Growth of Haut-Medoc, producing one of the top wines of its appellation, on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region.

Since the purchase of the property by the Frey family in 2000, this iconic Grand Cru Classe has continued to be distinguished by the consistent quality of its wines, bearing vintage after vintage a signature style based on elegance and finesse.

Armed with her conviction and ambition, Caroline Frey has placed her imprint on the wines of the Chateau La Lagune estate. After many years of work among the vines, the 80-hectare vineyard of Chateau La Lagune is now certified organic, managed according to the principles of environmentally friendly viticulture and biodynamic agriculture.

Caroline Frey aims to capture the essence of this magnificent terroir in the great wines of the estate and she does so by first understanding these terroirs fully.

The 2017 vintage will remain engraved in the collective memory of the Bordeaux wine world because of its bad weather. Chateau La Lagune, nevertheless, survived the challenges of the vintage through daily efforts in the vineyard, green harvesting and plot-by-plot vinification in the cellar.

Thanks to the excellent health of the fruit, which achieved optimal ripeness and were full of anthocyanins at the time of harvest, the Chateau La Lagune 2017 presents a beautiful density and color. Revealing the freshness and brilliance of the fruit on the nose, the palate evolves a beautiful structure with friendly and supple tannins. The acidity balances the texture nicely. The purity of the aromatic bouquet, the freshness and balance are the hallmarks of this new vintage of Chateau La Lagune, which is a real classic of the Medoc, capable of great evolution in the bottle.
