Decanter

This has reached a stage where the interplay of fruit and oak on the nose has reached its first peak, although there will be much more to come. The same is true of the palate, but here the interplay of fruit (including apricot and peach) and oak (creamy cashew nut) is with acidity and minerality too. It’s a wine of great intensity and vinosity, yet effortlessly graceful and refreshing, with a silky texture and many layers. Once again, great white Burgundy hoves into view.

This super-rich rosé has great balance, fruit and intensity. Its spice and wood aging support the fine fruit, richness and balanced acidity. This famous rosé remains a pioneering wine while showing the potential of Provence rosé. Drink this fine wine now.

Yohan Castaing

Château d'Esclans's premium cuvée, the 2021 Côtes de Provence Rosé Garrus, which was matured in French new oak, bursts from the glass with aromas of pear, grapefruit, vanilla, spices, lime, red berries and thyme flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textured, ripe and round, it's built around racy acids and a seamless palate. This vintage can be approached with pleasure even if it has 3-5 years of evolution ahead of it.

Delivers alluring aromatics grounded by generous salty, savory power, with light peach and white cherry flavors highlighted by grilled thyme and rosemary. Creamy and lush, with a persistent finish supported by chalky, smoky minerality. Grenache and Rolle. Drink now. 1,000 cases imported.

A complex and intense rosé with notes of oak spices to the elegant red berries and strawberries, together with hints of orange and grapefruit. Impressive purity and tension on the full-bodied palate, with an ethereal feel and a long, subtle and refreshing finish. Tactile, flavorful and elegantly structured. Very serious. Drink or hold.

80- to 90-year-old vines. 100% barrel-fermented, but with less new oak than in previous years. That oak is really delicious, and combines so well with the fruit – a really nicely made example, that delivers on fruit, balance, intensity and length. I guess those who don't like oak won't like this, but it works for me – there's sophistication, body, persistence and complexity. (RH)

Description

An iconic wine among the finest Côtes de Provence rosé wines

The estate

With the Mediterranean sea as a backdrop, Château d'Esclans is located in the heart of Provence, to the north-east of Saint-Tropez. The first signs of Château d'Esclans’ existence date back to the Roman Empire. A time when it was used as an observation post over the Gulf of Fréjus, in order to prevent any possible maritime invasions.

Château d'Esclans is an extraordinary estate in the heart of Provence. The Château is known for its old Grenache vines, which produce a grape whose aromas are more concentrated than the young vines.

Built in the 19th century, the current château has had many owners. Owned by Sacha Lichine since 2006, Château d'Esclans has contributed to the elevation of Côtes de Provence wines. With the Whispering Angel range, it has now become a world reference for Provence rosé wines.

The vineyard

On the French Riviera, a short distance away from the ancient Roman city of Fréjus, lies the Esclans Valley, home to the 44-hectare vineyard of the eponymous château. The vines are 35 years old on average and are planted on a terroir composed of clay, limestone or sandy gravel, depending on the plot. The tapestry of terroirs provides the château's wines with discernibly diverse identities.

The wine

Made from almost one-hundred-year-old Grenache vines, Garrus by Château d'Esclans is an essential reference among fine Côtes de Provence wines and is the utter embodiment of excellence and luxury throughout the world.

Vinification and ageing

Fermentation is carried out exclusively in French oak demi-muid.
