The refinement and structure of a wine from Tuscany
The estate
Nestled at 500 meters above sea level, the Castello di Ama estate reflects a rich historical heritage, as the small hamlet of "Ama" was already renowned more than five centuries ago for its agricultural activities and its production of wines from Tuscany.
The Castello di Ama estate oversees a vineyard of nearly 80 hectares, notably including the illustrious terroirs of Bellavista, San Lorenzo, Casuccia, and Montebuoni, located in the historic production area of Chianti and passed down from generation to generation.
The vineyard
A benchmark among Chianti Classico wines, Castello di Ama's San Lorenzo Gran Selezione is crafted entirely from grapes grown in the Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo, and Montebuoni vineyards, located in the historic heart of the appellation. The vines are planted between 460 and 525 meters above sea level on clay-limestone soil. This wine from Tuscany, produced since 2010, takes its name from a magnificent small valley, home to the eighteenth-century villas of the Pianigiani and Ricucci families, located between Florence and Siena.
The vintage
A mild, rainy winter, punctuated by a few cool days, gave way to a spring marked by episodes of frost that did not affect the estate's vineyards due to their altitude. A mild, dry June preceded a hot, sunny, and relatively dry summer.
Winemaking and aging
Parcel-by-parcel vinification using indigenous yeasts, in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with manual pumping-over. Total maceration of 22 to 25 days depending on the grape variety. Following the first draining, the wine is transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation. Blending takes place at the end of malolactic fermentation. Aging in oak barrels (22% new) lasts approximately 12 months.
Blend
Sangiovese (80%)
Merlot (13%)
Malvasia Nera (7%).
