The estate
The prestigious magazine, Wine Enthusiast, honored Penfolds as their 2013 New World Winery of the Year. The Penfolds estate had already established itself as an icon of fine Australian wines at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to Mary Penfold’s unparalleled determination. Indeed, the co-founder of the Penfolds estate put her heart and soul into making exceptional wines. Her lifelong work is reflected in the estate's success in establishing itself as a benchmark in Southern Australia. When Max Schubert became part of the Penfolds' story in the 1950s, he instilled the elegance of fine Bordeaux wines, that fascinated him greatly, into the estate's wines. Success shortly followed when the cellar master produced his famous Grange wines, which crossed Australian borders in order to win the hearts of wine lovers all around the world.
The wine
Penfolds’ Superblend 802A Cabernet Shiraz is an invitation to discover a refined creation: the blend of two varieties for which Penfolds is famous, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, both from iconic parcels. This superblend stems from a rigorous selection of parcels from the 2018 vintage.
Vinification and aging
Vinification by parcel, as well as aging for 22 months in new American oak barrels before blending.
The vintage
Although the winter began relatively dry, the rainfall intensified as the weeks passed. The warm and dry spring conditions favored an early budbreak, which was slowed down somewhat afterwards due to a drop in temperature. Flowering and fruit set took place under optimal conditions. The summer was particularly hot and dry, delaying the veraison period. Despite these extreme conditions, the grapes harvested had reached an optimal maturity and intensity.

The tasting
Color
Deep, dark red color.
Nose
Complex and elegant, the nose reveals a rich aromatic palette and combines fragrances of sweet crème brûlée shell with notes of kola nut, star anise and curry leaf.
Palate
Full-bodied and generous, the mouth seduces with its fruity aromas (blood plum compote, fig) sustained by gourmet notes of butter and caramel. As the tasting evolves, the aging period spent in oak barrels is expressed through subtle woody nuances (mahogany).
Storage
This Penfolds Superblend 802A Cabernet Shiraz can be cellared until around 2055 to reveal its full range of aromas.
