Description
Tasting
Appearance
The wine reveals a pale, clear yellow hue, illuminated by subtle lemony highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with a lovely citrus freshness, blending notes of lemon zest, grapefruit peel, and green apple pulp. With aeration, a delicate floral dimension emerges, revealing hints of white lily, acacia, and lime blossom.
Palate
The attack offers a perfectly integrated oakiness, marked by hints of toasted oak, fresh wood, and browned butter. The mid-palate unfolds a lush texture carried by aromas of stone fruit (yellow peach, apricot, plum) and candied citrus. The whole is supported by mouthwatering acidity and a mineral backbone reminiscent of chalk and quartz, leading into a lingering, aromatic finish with a subtle mineral bitterness.
Food and Wine Pairing
This white wine pairs beautifully with oysters, raw shellfish, or delicate pan-seared fish such as sole or turbot. It also complements white meats in cream and mushroom sauce, poultry, foie gras, as well as cheeses such as aged goat cheese, reblochon, or comté.
Serving and Aging Potential
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Sous le Puits" 2023 can be enjoyed now, but will continue to develop favorably in the cellar until approximately 2028.
The Elegance and Mineral Precision of a White Burgundy
The Estate
Officially founded in 1797, Maison Louis Latour is a true institution in Burgundy. Originally descended from a line of coopers, the family has built a benchmark estate that today owns the largest area of Grand Cru-classified vineyards in the region. Currently led by Florent Latour, representing the twelfth generation, the estate stands out for its commitment to sustainability and for maintaining its own independent cooperage. Combining tradition and innovation, the estate enjoys worldwide renown for the quality of its wines.
The Vineyard
Located within the prestigious Puligny-Montrachet appellation, the "Sous le Puits" climat takes its name from an old stone well. The vines, averaging around thirty years of age, thrive at altitudes between 230 and 320 meters, on south/southeast-facing slopes. The terroir features a complex geology combining brown limestone, marl, and clay-limestone deposits, giving the grapes a unique mineral identity.
The Vintage
2023 offered particularly favorable weather conditions. Moderate rainfall during the growing season was followed by generous sunshine and warm temperatures as harvest approached. Dry weather allowed the grapes to be picked in early September in impeccable health and at optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and Aging
Following hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting, the juice for this Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Sous le Puits" 2023 begins fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The must is then transferred to medium-toast French oak barrels, crafted in the estate's own cooperage, to complete alcoholic fermentation and undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged on its lees for approximately 10 months, with two rackings, to enhance aromatic complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit.
Grape Variety
Chardonnay (100%).
