Description
A great red wine from Saint-Estèphe
The estate
Owned by brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues since 2006, Château Montrose is an iconic benchmark of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it oversees one of the Médoc’s finest terroirs. In the past as today, Château Montrose has stood out for the quality of its wines, their style and distinction, making the estate a must-visit property with a worldwide reputation.
The wine
The Second Wine of Château Montrose, La Dame de Montrose is crafted from the same vineyard as the Grand Vin. Predominantly Merlot, La Dame de Montrose offers another expression of the Saint-Estèphe terroir. Supple and driven by red fruit notes, this wine is more immediately approachable in its youth.
The vineyard
Located on an exceptional site considered one of the greatest terroirs in the Bordeaux region, the vineyard of Château Montrose spans 95 hectares of vines. This large single-block vineyard is a rarity on a terroir regarded as an “elite core.” Situated close to the Gironde estuary, the Montrose vineyard is planted on gravel terraces mixed with surface sand, while the subsoil is clay-based.
The vintage
In addition to the environmental approach undertaken across the entire vineyard, 2019 ranks among the truly great years at Château Montrose. The year’s weather conditions, reinforced by the implementation of “green” viticultural practices, yielded a beautiful harvest that began on September 19 and ended on October 8. Harvesting was carried out intra-plot in order to vinify the lots separately.
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (48%), Merlot (45%), Cabernet Franc (3%), Petit Verdot (4%).
