Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Bright, slightly high-toned and pure, this delivers a beam of white peach, Meyer lemon and green almond that is lengthy, poised and sleek in feel. Honeysuckle and salted butter notes gild the finish liberally. Drink now through 2050. 80 cases made.

Decanter

Gorgeous nose, really full and exotic, thrilling and vibrant. Vanilla, cream, ginger and salted caramel. Sweet and unctuous, sugary and full, a really generous expression at the rich, dense, heady and opulent end of the spectrum, but so well delivered and still with mouthwatering acidity that gives it life. It’s on the overt side right now, but there’s something really compelling about this. A fabulous wine with so much going on.

100% Sauvignon Blanc. Cask sample. Lifted, fresh and zesty. Jumps out of the glass. Mandarin, pear and citrus notes. Palate sweet but comfortably so. Long and tangy with a bitter-edged finish. Delicious. (JL)

Le Figaro Vin

Very ripe, almost stewed pear, dried apricot, roasted pineapple and a hint of cardamom: the wine’s aromatics are reminiscent of a dessert menu, and it lives up to its name. On the palate, the very ripe fruits (mango, roasted pineapple) and dried fruits (apricot, date) lend their creaminess to a particularly broad, fleshy and intense texture. A velvety feel takes the lead—caressing and seductive—before a finale full of pep and energy, with an almost saline touch.

Description

A alluringly concentrated and vivacious great Sauternes wine

The estate

Located in Barsac, in the Sauternes appellation, Château Doisy-Daëne has belonged to the Dubourdieu family since 1924. Supported by three generations of winegrowers, this Second Cru Classé in 1855 with its exceptional terroir produces sweet wines that are recognised among the greatest wines of Bordeaux. Denis Dubourdieu has been at the head of the estate since 2000.

The vineyard

Château Doisy-Daëne is located on the terroir of the Barsac plateau in Sauternes. This area is characterised by its unique geological formation. There is a thin layer of clayey sands called "the red sands of Barsac" which rest on limestone subsoils. This porous limestone helps to regulate the water supply to the vines by releasing the water stored during the winter. The wines of Château Doisy-Daëne are therefore distinguished by their exceptional finesse.

The wine

L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne was created in 1990. This rare and exceptional wine was born from an experiment carried out by Denis Dubourdieu. He wanted to experiment with making a cuvée from a Sauvignon Blanc grape affected by noble rot, pushed to the extreme. The grapes were harvested at the beginning of November with a high sugar content, a high alcohol potential and very concentrated. Since 1990, only very great vintages have been produced, and in exclusive quantities, from the estate’s historic plots.

Winemaking and ageing

The production of Château Doisy-Daëne's sweet wines involves an haute couture vinification process designed to combine oenological progress with tradition. Thus, in order to harvest the grapes that have developed the famous "noble rot" at the most favourable moment, the harvest is carried out, grape by grape, with the greatest rigour by experienced pickers. Pressing for 8 to 10 hours. Fermentation in French oak barrels (100% new).

Blend

Sauvignon Blanc (100%).
