Description
The freshness and power of a fascinating Sauternes wine
The estate
Located in Barsac, in the Sauternes appellation, Chateau Doisy-Daene has belonged to the Dubourdieu family since 1924. Led by three generations of winegrowers, this 1855 Second Cru Classe produces sweet wines that are poised among the finest wines of Bordeaux. Denis Dubourdieu has been at the helm of the estate since 2000.
The vineyard
Chateau Doisy-Daene is located on the terroir of the Barsac plateau in Sauternes. This area is characterized by its unique geological formation. The soil is composed of a thin layer of clayey sands referred to as "the red sands of the barsacais" which rest upon limestone subsoils. This porous limestone soil helps to regulate the vines’ water supply by releasing the water stored during the winter. Therefore, the wines of Chateau Doisy-Daene stand out due to their exceptional finesse.
The wine
L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daene was created in 1990. This rare and exceptional wine is the fruit of the experiment carried out by Denis Dubourdieu. He wanted to work on making a cuvée from a Sauvignon Blanc varietal that had been affected by noble rot and had reached an extreme stage. The grapes were harvested at the beginning of November showcased a high sugar content, a high alcohol potential and very concentrated grapes. Since 1990, only very fine vintages have been produced, and in strictly confidential quantities.
Vinification and aging
The production of Chateau Doisy-Daene's sweet wines requires an "haute couture" vinification process designed to combine oenological innovation with tradition. Thus, in order to harvest the grapes that have developed the famous "noble rot" at the most favorable time, the harvest is carried out with the utmost rigor by experienced pickers and requires 3 to 6 rounds. Afterwards, the elaboration is very minimalistic. The juices are then extracted by slow pressing. Then, the rich and pure musts are fermented in oak barrels, renewed every quarter. The wine is aged for 10 months in barrels and then 9 months in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then bottled.
