Description
Tasting Notes and Characteristics: Château Trotanoy 2019
Tasting
Color
The glass shows a deep garnet-purple hue, dense and nearly opaque at the core, with a youthful violet edge that signals a wine still at the beginning of its evolution.
Nose
The bouquet opens on ripe black cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry, layered with fig and damp earth. Tobacco, cedar and graphite notes follow, alongside black olive and spice, while violet and lavender add a floral lift. A faint mineral, crushed-stone and iron undertone runs beneath the fruit, echoing the estate's iron-rich subsoil.
Palate
The attack is rich and velvety, carried by dense, well-coated tannins that feel creamy and juicy rather than austere. The mid-palate shows considerable power and concentration, framed by freshness that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. The finish is remarkably long, closing on dark fruit, cocoa, graphite and a firm, almost metallic streak that gives the wine its backbone.
Food and wine pairings
Given its density and firm tannic structure, this wine pairs naturally with red meats and furred game: roast beef, grilled lamb, venison or a hearty braised dish all stand up well to its concentration. It also works nicely with mushroom-based preparations or dishes built around rich, reduced sauces, where the earthy and spiced notes of the wine can echo similar flavors on the plate.
Serving and cellaring
Several critics who tasted Château Trotanoy 2019 point to a long drinking window, with suggested ranges stretching from the late 2020s into the 2050s depending on the source. This points to a wine built for patient cellaring, though its tannins are already approachable enough to be appreciated with some air in its youth.
A Pomerol Shaped by Dense Clay and Gravel, Expressed Through Pure Merlot
The Estate
Château Trotanoy is located in the Pomerol appellation, on Bordeaux's right bank, where vine-growing on this site can be traced back to the seventeenth century. Acquired by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, the property is today owned by the Société Civile du Château Trotanoy, part of the Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix group, and directed by Christian and Edouard Moueix. The vineyard covers roughly 7.2 hectares on the plateau of Pomerol, known for its dense clay and gravel soils resting on an iron-rich subsoil locally called "crasse de fer."
The Vineyard
The vineyard sits on some of the best-exposed sections of the Pomerol plateau, close to prestigious neighboring estates. Its soils combine gravel over clay with deep black clay resting on an iron-bearing subsoil, a mix that gives the wine power, depth and complexity. The vines slope gently westward, with gravel more present at the higher points and clay dominating further down the slope. A portion of the plantings consists of old vines that survived the severe frosts of 1956, contributing to the wine's natural concentration.
The Vintage
The 2019 growing season in Bordeaux was marked by generally warm, dry conditions with episodes of heat, interspersed with cooler spells that helped preserve aromatic freshness. On the clay-rich terroirs of Pomerol, these conditions allowed for steady, well-regulated ripening, resulting in grapes with notable concentration while retaining structural freshness.
Winemaking and aging
Château Trotanoy 2019 was vinified in small concrete vats, following the estate's established approach of restrained, careful extraction. Aging took place in French oak barrels for approximately 16 to 18 months, with around 50% new wood, a regimen consistent with the property's long-standing practice of letting the fruit and terroir lead rather than imposing a heavy oak signature.
Grape Varieties
This wine is produced from 100% merlot, sourced from the estate's clay and gravel soils on the Pomerol plateau.
