Description

The freshness and aromatic expression of a red wine from Pomerol

The estate

Situated in the heart of the Pomerol appellation, a stone's throw away from the Church of Saint-Jean, Chateau Saint-Pierre is an essential reference of the appellation. Chateau Saint-Pierre is renowned for its fine Pomerol red wines produced thanks to the full and undivided attention of Stephane Derenoncourt and Frederic Massie, both world-renowned wine-consultants. Silky, full-bodied and structured, the wines of Chateau Saint-Pierre are undoubtedly Pomerols built to age.

The vineyard

Chateau Saint-Pierre is a Pomerol wine made from a vineyard that spreads over 5 parcels and is located on the top of the appellation’s plateau, resting on predominantly gravelly-sandy soils.

The vintage

Frost, strong disease pressure and low amounts of sunshine are the main features of this particularly unstable 2021 vintage. These conditions resulted in a later harvest compared to previous vintages (24th and 28th of September for the Merlot grapes and 2nd of October for Cabernet Franc grapes). While the Merlot grapes were particularly affected by these weather conditions, the Cabernet Franc grapes were less susceptible to coulure and mildew and benefited from the mild weather and sunshine at the end of September and beginning of October, which refined their maturity. Despite low yields, the grapes harvested gave rise to a wine that reveals both finesse and freshness. The profile of this delicate vintage is far from that of the previous sunny vintages. 2021 is therefore defined as a blending vintage and reveals the structure and maturity of the Cabernet Franc varietal.

Vinification and aging

Very precise vinification by plot. Malolactic fermentation in vats before being placed into barrels and aged in 500 liter barrels (20%), 225 liter barrels (70%) and amphoras (10%).

The blend

Merlot (75%)

Cabernet Franc (25%).
