Description
The freshness and richness of a Saint-Estèphe wine
The estate
Proudly overhanging the Gironde estuary since the 19th century, the Château Phélan Ségur vineyard is divided into four distinct plots in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.
The vineyard
Château Phélan Ségur is a Saint-Estèphe wine from a 70-hectare vineyard. The vines are 35 years old on average and benefit from a clayey gravel terroir.
The vintage
Despite a dry winter, the vineyard budded early. Because of its geographical location near the Gironde, the vineyard was protected "in extremis" from the frost episode recorded in April. The month of June was hot, with uniform flowering and a hailstorm that hit the north of the vineyard on 20 June, causing the loss of 50% of the harvest. Due to a particularly dry summer, the rigour of the teams in the management of the vineyard as well as the clay soils enabled the vines to resist these extreme conditions. The grapes were small but very healthy.
Winemaking and ageing
Vinification using indigenous yeasts from the parcels. Aged in barrels, 55% of which were new.
Blend
Merlot (56%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (40%)
Cabernet Franc (2%)
Petit Verdot (2%)

Deep, almost black in colour, with purple highlights.
Nose
Complex and concentrated, the nose combines fruity, spicy and floral notes. Scents of black cherry, rose and cedar combine harmoniously.
Palate
A fleshy and mellow attack precedes a palate combining power, density and richness. As the tasting progresses, silky and coating tannins draw out harmoniously to a persistent and balanced finish, enhanced by refreshing minty notes.
